New Here & to Saltwater

Hello everybody! I joined here last week but haven't posted yet. I'm slowly building a saltwater tank up. I picked up the Marineland 60 Gallon tank that PetSmart had on sale back in February. Since then I've added the Marineland 350 filter, a Coral Life 65g skimmer, a 150W Ehim Jager heater, and a Jebao WP-25 wave maker.

I picked up 60 pounds of Natures Ocean live reef sand and Instant Ocean salt. I filled the tank with RO water and have been letting it run for the last two weeks with nothing else in there just to make sure there are no other issues.

I'm looking to add some live rock and let it cycle for a while, and then add some fish and coral after that. I also need to get a light and was looking to go LED.

Just wanted to say hi and let you know I'm lurking and reading a bunch of posts to get as much knowledge as I can.

Thanks!!!
Matt

Welcome aboard CR and to the hobby Matt, glad your finding the posts useful. What are your longer term goals for coral? I'd recommend sticking to hardy soft coral while you start off. The'll be easier to keep going with the filtration your starting off with.

I'm okay with soft coral to start, just looking for some color in the tank. Any specific suggestions on what would be best? I did promise the wife some clown fish but that is the only thing determined at this point.

Yeah most people associate Nemo's with saltwater. Just becareful of maroon clowns, they get more aggressive than other variants

Heres a link that help you pick coral better than I can explain. It'll be key to watch your parmeters if you decide to try difficult Zoas or and of the SPS coral on the list. One thing to keep in mind, some of these corals can be quite difficult to remove from the tank in the long term if you change your mind. GSP, Xenia, Red mushrooms and some Palys are very hardy.

Awesome link! I'll be reading through this to help me decide. Thanks!

Welcome and sweet setup!

Quick suggestion: If you can still get behind the tank, paint the back black. It'll hide the cords and equipment and your coral will "pop" more against that dark background.

Good luck!

Hey Matt,

I have some "previously live rock" (very much dead now) that I would be willing to sell at a discounted rate if you are interested. Also happy to give you some live rock/live sand to seed your setup. I may also have some large live rock for sale in my 180 that would not fit in my new tank purchase.

Feel free to PM me if there is any interest. Welcome to CR!

Jon

Welcome I also have some cycled live rock that you can have for seed. Live in new lenox Frankfort side. I will be shutting down a 55 soon and don't want to just pull this rock to dry.

I'll hold that for you if needed.

Cool, i'm heading out of town this weekend but I will send you a message on Monday to coordinate a day to grab it if that works for you. Thanks!!
imranh - I was planning on getting something to cover it. Didn't really think to paint it and now that its full, it will be difficult.

Also, thanks to everybody for the warm welcome.

Welcome! If you decide to paint I can recommend Americana by DecoArt. I used the Lamp (Ebony) Black. It went on easy and looks great. The eight ounce bottle from Michaels was more than enough for my 55. I'm new here also. CR is great, lots of knowledge & help. Looking forward to following the build.
