Matt's Nuvo 8 Nano

New tank... Yay! I added sand that I had from my 37 cube that sat in a bucket for two months. It did smell a bit. I added fresh saltwater and a piece of lr. I plan to take the rock from my 15 setup. Should I wait for the sand to cycle? Most my livestock is attached to the lr. I wouldn't want to cycle my corals. I'm unsure how toxic this sand may be.

I might as well groom this thread to be my tank thread for the Nuvo. Here is some updated info on the system and its inhabitants.

I would wait. Test the water until the cycle is done. Smelly sand that has been sitting has got to be toxic IMO.
 
I didn't rinse the sand. Should I go buy new and resetup or should I wait out the cycle. Idk if the sand is holding any toxins.
 
Would running my brs reactor with carbon help? This sand is really fine. It clouds with just a wipe of the mag glass cleaner. Will the sand settle once some bacteria is built up? I have a aquean 45 filter running. I'm rinsing the pad every hour.

I'm gonna retrofit three 3 up cree LEDs. 6rb 3nw. 27watts. Im not sure if cooling will be an issue. I'm looking for the worlds smallest fan. :)
 
i would keep testing water daily while its set up... check your levels.. not worth losing livestock...
 
I have a touch of ammonia and nitrite. Not as bad as I thought. I'll be waiting out cycle I guess. I'm thinking a few weeks. What if I do 3 gallon waterchanges every other day. Maybe a soft cycle. Or do I want really high ammonia so that bacteria grows stronger? Ph is 8.3. I used lots of buffer in the new water.
 
Even if you wait the cycle out, you're gonna have ongoing issues with the sand. It's best to clean it well, or just replace it.
 
Looks like I'm gonna take it down then. I finally got the glass clean too. I used a nanocube surface Skimmer thingy to raise the waterline a bit. Looks better.
 
I bought a 10lb bag of livesand today. I have bio spira as well and new saltwater. Should I get a shrimp or dump some robs food to get the cycle going? I'm using cured lr from my other setup. I'm not really expecting a cycle unless I pollute the tank. Should I add a fish?

i would go with the shrimp.. dnt add a fish yet..
 
I added a fish today :) I tossed a paly and a hermit in yesterday. I fed the tank with some pellets and a piece of Silverside in a bag to hopefully get a cycle going, This morning i have a small amount of ammonia and nitrite. Its showing around 1 for nitrate. Im pretty sure this is my weak cycle. I used LR and wasn't sure i would see one but i guess the live sand had some dieoff.

What do you guys think of the G Series from fluval Hagon? The G3 looks like it might be that lil extra i may need. Its either this at nearly $250-$300 or an MP10ES.

I have mod plans for the flow in this guy. Its weak to say the least. Im gonna purchase the nuvo 16 pump and add a T. Two outlets; one stock and the other as far left as i can go to the return inlet. Also add another Spinstream.
