Hey everyone! Excited to be here on this forum and looking forward to learning from all the vets out there!!
I'm a total rookie at this marine tank thing. Bought a rr150 the other day and that's about as far as I got! The plumbing that came with it makes no sense.
If you don't mind I have a couple of questions.
1. Building my own sump, what size 'feeder tank' should I get?
2. What is the recommended protein skimmer
Yes I'll be doing both reef and fish and looking forward to this new challenge. I don't know all the terminology just yet but looking forward to the learning process!!
Forum admins, if I jumped out of line with my questions in the intro..I apologize I'll break up and ask questions in the appropriate section.
Thanks!!:dance3:

Welcome to chicago reefs. My advice -- take your time. Get a sump big enough to fit your refugium, skimmer, other equipments you want down there. Dont get a sump thats too big as you have a big enough tank. You want to leave some space in the stand for supplies and other equipments.
Get a good quality skimmer that can handle bigger volume than your tank as skimmers are usually overrated. Get a skimmer that can handle 200+ gallons. Ive seen a few nice skimmers on craigslist. They are very expensive new. Good luck with the hobby!
If you have a basement and are able to plumb your sump into the basement, that is the way to go. My next build will have my sump in the basement. That gives you the most flexibility as far as quietness in the tank room, you can get all the equipment you want without worrying about space in the tank stand, easy water changes down in the basement, and you can make your sump as big as you want in the basement.

Welcome! I'm sure you will find lots of useful info on here. If you're new to the hobby, they best thing I can tell you is do lots of research, and be patient. Good luck!
