nikon 1 J1 for coral pictures

I have been given the opportunity to pickup a Nikon 1 J1 for a great price ($100). It comes with the standard lens.

Would it take decent pictures? I think I would need a macro lens but what lens I don't know.

Anyone use one? Any recommendations for a lens?

Hey Steve,

It's really hard to say. I took a quick look at their lenses they offer, but wasn't able to find one specifically made for macro.

With that being said, try to find the lens with the shortest minimum focusing distance, and you can use that as a macro, sort of. I would bust out my macro and regular zoom lens to show you the difference, but my whole bag is buried in my closet.

Basically the macro lenses magnify the crap out of what you're shooting.

You may want to research if there are any magnifiers that will work with their lenses, and the reviews of those magnifiers. But for that price, I'm sure you'll get a really nice camera that you can walk around with and not only use for certain situations.

I wish there was a point and shoot with a macro lens lol

I actually used this same J1 to take photo's of my nieces baptism and the pictures turned out great to me. I just would hate to not be able to use it for coral as well.

You can easily use it for corals, but you just wont have the same magnification of a macro lens.

what actually makes a macro lens a macro lens? I don't know if I'm thinking right but I see a lot of people talk about 100mm. which Nikon does have a 10-100mm lense

The magnification. Pretty much the only way I can describe it.

It's basically similar to the difference between the magnification of your eye vs a microscope. Not exactly like that but you get the idea. Let me see if I can find a pic to give you an example.

Here ya go:

the link isn't showing anything for me.

Check again. This site is tripping and won't let me imbed the image for some reason.

hahaha you just ruined blue berries for me! It looks creepy!

So I have been doing some google searches and from what I understand is that macro lenses just have a different way of focusing. I guess some more research into it will be needed before I do anything.

The $100 deal is sweet for the J1 but if I'm going to be limited I might rather spend a little more on craigslist or at a pawn shop for a camera that will have more options for lenses.

Not a bad idea. You can probably find some deals on older rebels/nikons and also macros. More than likely a macro lens, even used will cost more than a used camera.
