OG Fancy's 40 Breeder Mixed Reef

Hello all! I've finally managed some time to get this build thread going. I've been out of the hobby for over 10 years mainly due to college and post-graduate endeavors. I have finally graduated this past year and had the reef bug bite me once again. Had a 90 gallon reef back in the early 2000's, but decided on a nice 40 breeder this time around to start...i'm sure I will be upgrading soon :). This tank is about 4-5 months old now. I must admit, I did rush it a bit with the livestock, but so far so good. I check my parameters 1-2x a week and have been doing ~20% water changes every 2 weeks or even sooner. I also recently got into freshwater planted tanks as well, and I'll add some pictures of that at the end. Let me know what you guys think!

Mounted two power strips on the left and right side of the stand. Having individual switches is awesome to have!

Some livestock now. I used live sand and also had the dry rock from reefcleaners curing in a tub of heated saltwater with other live rock and filter media from a more mature tank. Cycled fairly quickly this way. Note the mesh covers over the powerheads..one of the nems decided to float around and got shredded :(

Most of my livestock is from Seven Seas. Also a good amount of coral from Reef geeks, sea schor, and sho-tank. Many of these pictures were taken through an orange lens to filter out the blue. I used my camera phone (LG G3) and stock photo editing software as well.

Equipment/Sump:
- reef octopus 110nwb
- cheap rio return pump..not even sure the GPH, but i'm pretty sure its well underpowered. I do run 2 RW-4 Jebao pumps in the display with a koralia nano as well.
- Via Aqua heater set at 75 Deg. I think the integrated thermometer is off because my tank sits around 77.7 with two different digital thermometers when the heater is set at 75.
- Simple home-depot clip on light with a home depot 6300k LED flood light bulb. I may change this bulb as it is prone to growing a little cyano.
- If you look to the left of the skimmer, I have a small aquaclear 20 HOB filter running there! I had it lying around from a small nano tank and decided to use it as a GFO/Carbon media filter. It doesn't do a great job like a gfo/carbon reactor, but hey, it'll do for now. The sump also has a media tray right before the refugium where I use carbon and GFO in filter media bags.

I use that yellow glove every time I need to reach into the tank. It really is good practice to do so. Keeps my arms dry, and the tank free of contaminants.

5 gal ATO. I mix 1 tsp kalkwasser per gallon of ro/di and feed it via an aqualifter. Seems to be working.

Looking good, What were u doing with the mesh bags near the top?

One of my bubble tip anemones got shredded in the powerhead when it was finding a nice spot to plant itself. I put mesh over the powerheads so the other nems didn't follow suit while they found a good spot.

Made a few HD video's of both reef and freshwater planted. Let me know what you guys think!

Nice update! Glad to hear that at only a year the tank is on autopilot too. Autopilot systems are so much less stress.
