The picture does look like snow brushes or shovels, but they are grabbers... Do they have metal parts? Mine have gotten kinda sticky. I think they are probably rusting a little inside. I don't have these exact ones though...
 
Used mine in the tank and worked good for a week. Then wouldn't open at all. Would squeeze handle and wouldn't move. Think there is metal piece that rusted.
 
They have materials that are cheap and who knows if it'll have adverse affect on your tank. As someone else mentioned it might have metals that rusts without you knowing.
 
Not sure on I'd its this exact one. But a client of mine bought one. It has a metal rod/string type connectors. Lasted a week and rusted through and snapped inside.

There is a steal cable connecting the handle and the grasper.
Inside the grasper there is a metal spring and a metal pin. And in the handle is some cheap plastic pieces that were cracked before I opened it.
