old and new sand?

what do you think about adding new sand to the sand that is already in my tank, the sand in my 220 display is 5 years old and its only about an inch deep and i want a little more, should i suck out all the old sand and replace or do you think i can add some new to it idk because i never have.

I'd just rinse the dust off the new stuff really well, and add it on top of the existing sand. Won't hurt anything.

Thats a bit tricky. Last I checked, the "rule" was an inch or less or 3 inches or more (for DSB). I personally wouldn't go in between. Do you intend to have a dsb?

no i was thinking like 20 more pounds just to fresh things up a bit pluse i just added over 200 snails

Pfft, 20# in a 220 is nothing. Just rinse REALLY well and slowly add. Assuming you just want some clean sand on top of the old stuff.

I added new sand once and was really disappointed because there was a very noticeable difference in the 2. Hopefully you don't have the same problem.

i good point i think im going to syphon all the old sand out that is overloaded with nutrients and start fresh
