I took the first two years of my major at Oakton Community College. Got good grades and transferred to IIT for architecture. Got a $5000 scholarship, per year, for having a good GPA. I say the harder you study, the cheaper it gets. Perfect GPAs usually mean school is cheap, wherever you go. That's great incentive to be a good student, in my opinion. FAFSA is great too. It seems complicated, but it's mostly done online and you always get something to help you out. At least it worked for me. Rule is: A poor college student gets more money from uncle Sam. So having a crappy job, showing low income on tax returns, usually means bonus points as far as FAFSA goes. There's my 2 cents.
