So we start a new with a 28 Gallon Biocube. So far aside from the tank and stand, we have dry rock, sand, salt, AI Sol lights (Hood will be moded) , Apex jr, Nano power head & heater, RODI filter.

We still need a return pump (Rio 600) and a protein skimmer (Still looking into which one we'd want to go with), sponges & GFO

First we need to disinfect and clean the aquarium. To do this I will fill the tank using peroxide and tap water with the return pump in and let it furn for a day. We will then drain the tank and just fill it with tap water the following day and again just let it run with the return pump for the day.

I think you'll be much happier with the AI lights compared to the stock lights. For return pumps I had better luck with the cobalt than the rio.

I think so too. I just have to mod the hood i order to get the light in there. The Cobalt, was it that much quieter for you?

So after some thought I'm planning on moding the hood so I can use one of my AI SOl lights.

So as I'm thinking about how I want to set up this biocube and being a proponent of a fug and how I'd like to possibly add a ruby red dragonet, I'm thinking of added a HOB fug not only for the natural filtration but also to keep pods in there. I'd remove the basket that sits in the middle of the back were the water flows into the back partition and replace it with a protein skimmer. I'd also like to use GFO but would rather not use a media reactor... Thoughts???

Good looking start, what livestock are you planning? I'll second Rio being long term pumps. Let them run in a pitcher of vinegar every few months and they'll run for many years. The GFO will clump badly and prevent flow going through the center mass if just used in a sock. It needs a reactor to keep it a moving bed to be used efficiently.

Thanks Jr!

Well... Obviously this topic did come up with my little one and the first two would have to be snowflake clown fish (one orange & one black). The dragnet would be my choice but we also have come to the conclusion that we'd like to have a wrasse ( we had a melanurus and he loved it when he went into the sand).

So if your guessing that we are already talked about upgrading to a 40 before water even hit the biocube you would be correct. We had a 35 and had a melanurus wrassein there which did great.... So this got me thinking yet again.... I was able to keep a yellow tail tamaran wrasse hummmmm

Sweet and welcome back Ed.

along with peroxide .. you would want to run Venegar also for like a day or two and that would make it really easy to clean ..

when you have the tank all stabilized you are welcome to Free frags of Garf bonsai, Sunny Ds and couple more frags if i can ( ill keep them aside for you so come and pick whenever )

Sweet!!!

Thanks so much Tin!

Ok nixing the 40 idea and back to the 28..

Any advice on a good skimmer for the jbj 28 biocube? Suggestions are welcomed.

Good call on the GFO jrpark22000. Have to give that some more thought...

Got both Rio 600 return pumps installed on the tank and started the peroxide/water running last night. I'll remove all of that water tomorrow night and do another two days of vinegar and water. Hope to get sand and rocks in the tank this weekend.

Nothing in the tank yet.... But here you go.

Those ghost skimmers seem to be pretty decent, although I have no personal experience with them. I've also heard good things about the jns hob skimmers.

Have you decided on stocking plans yet?

I've head good reviews about them but we'll see. I'm going to try to make it to the expo before I pull the trigger. That said I'm a big fan of RO as you know :)

As of now me and my son have agreed on.

2 clownfish (he wants an orange/white snowflake & I'm getting a black/white but still trying to dig which one I'd want)

I really really want a yellow tail wrasse and I was successful when I had the 90 so...

Corals... I'm such a zoa guy so that's a given. I'm going to try and see if Mia is willing to part with a frag of his pink boobies.

I've never had much luck with sps but I'd like to try and get a milli.
