Our Future Reefers

Alright, soapbox time!

As stewards of our captive ecosystems and ambassadors to the non-reefing public it is our responsibility to pass on knowledge. Every time I have guests over for a party or gathering (ALL the time) I find myself overwhelmed with questions about my system. Questions from adults and children: What is that? Why is that? Where is it from? Why this? Why that? Etc, etc... Sometimes from adults and sometimes from children.

No matter who it is I always answer every answer ad nauseum. I make sure to mention biodiversity, human impact, resource management and conservation (using age appropriate context and references of course). I always make sure to not overdo my responses, but with children this is impossible to accomplish. Children are literally the future of this planet. If we take our love of the ocean environment and give it to the next generation by answering questions who knows how we can shape, create and inspire the next generation?

So the next time a child asks you questions about your tank, answer them, explain things in a way a child can understand but don't underestimate them! Children can comprehend complex principles and theories, take the time to inspire them. They learn by asking questions and seeing examples(speaking from personal experience as a former teacher). Answer questions and explain to a child what they see in your tank. If they can't understand something the first time, break it down a little until they understand...they won't forget that you took the time to answer them!

So if you take a few minutes to answer a child's questions you WILL impact their life! Let your awe and amazement in our natural world show when you talk to a child. If you speak to 100 curious minds and just one follows through to pursue a future in science, engineering or technology, is'nt your time well spent and your legacy written in their memory? Who knows when a few minutes of your time can shape a child's future for the betterment of our planet?

Always continue to learn. Nurture childrens' curiosity, remember they ARE our future.

Reef on.:)

Post a picture of your future reefer if you feel the same...

Nobody is teaching their children about our hobby or conservation?

I think reefers, by nature, feel this way. I'm sure most of us drive our loved ones crazy with talking or teaching about our hobby and by default the environment in general. Your post is definitely well intended, but I think it's sort of preaching to the choir.

Hahaha yeah I agree. I'm totally preaching to the choir. But I just want to start a discussion. You know, contribute to the forum...I'm not trying to be sarcastic. I only have the best intentions!

3 out of 4 of my boys are always watching and asking me questions about my tank. I've always taught them about all of nature(bugs, fish, mammals) and have always been a hands on dad. My oldest helps me with water changes and kinda knows how to perform all the tests. I do think it's important to pass this information along to your children and to inquisitive adults.

Thank you Lionel! I must admit, I lack the well rounded naturalist approach. My little girl is terrified of bugs and reptiles so it's hard to talk about those. We just found out my wife is pregnant so hopefully it's a boy...

My little boy is on the nemo stage where he just likes took look at all the pretty fish and name them. ( he's over the throw what ever u get your hands on, mostly toys into the sump stage thank god) and my other two are only 3 months old so I've shown them the tank but they just smile.

yeah my wife thinks im nuts too haha but my niece LOVES the tank! she likes picking stuff out too and its always good to have an extra hand in helping and when they learn enough they can always help you out if you are on vacation or something!

My younger brother knows the maintenance patterns, but he's also the one who siphoned ten gallons of top off through my bedroom floor, soo......

Congratulations...and good luck getting that boy, they're awesome. :)

Congrats! We're due for our second girl in Dec so that will be somewhat of a repeat adventure; but all kids are their own person, so I'm sure we'll have a couple curve balls.

My 2yr old has always been interested in fish, and that's why I decided to bring back my tanks. She's actually a daughter of an entomologist, so being scared of bugs is almost out of the question, lol. When we was younger, she definitely would "help" with where I put frags and the frag racks :p

Here's a pic of her helping with the 75G

Yes, it's great teaching our kids about things that we love.. My oldest has her own tank already, which she makes sure everything is ok. She also helps with WC and feeding all the fish. Not to long ago she requested a bigger tank.. Was WOW!! But all my family supports this crazy hobby :D. Most members know my Wife and say that she is the true reefer

Here is my youngest looking at Cubbies candy collection .. LOL!!
