I know that petco has pretty much become synonymous with being the last place on earth any self-respecting reefer would go to buy fish or corals from, but that isn't what I'm here to talk about.
Over the last month or so I've been searching for a Magnificent Foxface, particularly a juvenile. Any time I see them in the store, they are usually 4"+, which I don't want. I want a small one so I can watch it grow, as well as most places want over $150 for it. So in my searches, I found a website that said they had one, petco.com. I normally would never even consider buying from them, on account of the fact that even buying online is supporting their fish. I did contact their customer support, and I discovered their fish come straight from their distributor, and they are never actually stocked in a petco facility.
So I decided to take the risk, and I ordered some fish. Since I was already going to be paying for shipping, I decided to buy a few others as well. I ended up getting a powder blue tang, coral beauty angelfish, a candy stripe pistol shrimp, magnificent foxface, a green montipora digita, and a favia. (I got the corals just to qualify for free shipping).
First the corals arrived last friday, and they looked good. The montipora has been doing fantastic, and looks fantastic. The price wasn't bad for what it is, but it looks good. The next day, saturday, my tang, angel, and pistol shrimp arrived. I was a little upset about the foxface, but it apparently went on backorder at the exact time I ordered it. I also was upset because on their site they marked the fish as 1.5-2.5 inches long, but it was a full grown angelfish. The tang looked great though, and the pistol shrimp was tiny.
After saturday I have been contacting petco's customer support and I have to say, they have been pretty fantastic. I got a $5 coupon because of the size issue, and they helped me out. This morning, I finally got my foxface.
Long story short. Petco.com's online fish/coral site is actually pretty high quality and good prices. None of the fish I bought have died, and all look extremely healthy. The tang and angel are coming along well, a week in quarantine now. They are all eating quite well.
I know there aren't a lot of reviews out there for petco.com, and this isn't meant to make up for what their stores do, but I just wanted to let people know what I experienced.
