Plumbing help?

Ok great people are the reefing community need some help here. As I have posted before I have a deep sea aquatics 105 which comes with two drains and two returns. Now I have never set up a sump/ overflow. Due to this I am asking for your help on how to design my drains to the sump. That's what I planned on doing as I've read it a few times. My question is is there a certain height that everything has to be or is there something I can read or find online how to build it?
 
can some one steering me in the right direction on what check valve to use on my return pipes
 
I personally like the check valve just in case I move the return nozzle to far under the water for some stupid reason and forget to put it back I like the clear wye check valve that can be serviced and cleaned... but I'm overly redundant in my plumbing...lots of unions and some check valves and well supported....etc :)

I got some plumbing done waiting on check valves and my gate valves to come in this week, I would post pictures but it won't let me right now grrrr
