Poor lil seahorse at Animal Krackers

I went to animal krackers today to look around and buy my kids a hamster, and saw a small yellow tang in their coral tank picking on a seahorse. I felt so bad for the seahorse, watching the tang constantly pick at him, and the seahorse couldn't do anything but lay on the sand and every once in awhile try to swim away. I found an employee and advised her, at which time she removed both seahorses and placed them in another tank. I just had to share. Here's a quick snapshot...

Back to old habits. I thought they where gonna improve. They have to hire someone with more knowledge in saltwater tanks.

You ain't lying...their tanks are starting to go downhill fast. smh

You done good!

Thanks Jeni...I truly felt bad for that seahorse. I sat there and watched the tang pretty much kill it, and automatically wanted to reach in there and pull it out. I've never felt so bad for a creature until today...I hope it pulls thru, because it doesn't have its rear fins anymore.

Someone should should print this thread out and drop it in their mailbox. Let them know we are watching them and will spread the word to folks.

I also told the lady that they need to take better care of their livestock, because we talk about the different lfs'(including this one)in the area. That's probably why she moved so fast to take them out the tank, because usually they don't seem to care.

Do it Brenda I think that's why they tried to get their tanks all nice and clean and replaced lights and this and that because they where losing money in that dept because people would talk bad about them. I'd say let's see if their tanks get back to the way they where nasty and horrible. Then take some high quality pics of their tanks and send them to the daily south town newspaper since they're on the south side. Have them write an article on how bad they treat their livestock. And maybe that'll force them to hire someone that dedicates their time to the saltwater dept and only that. Because I know for a fact that none of them are knowledgable about saltwater at all not even a tiny bit.

Ok, that tells me that you can't put a seahorse in a tank with a tang. I didn't know that but a fish store is supposed to know.....

I guess we can't rely on LFS to know this or care about it.

Yeah, you would think they knew that. I had to tell her that seahorses need "species only" tanks.

We really need to get this to the newspaper if it gets worse

Seahorses are very slow swimming fish. They can't compete for food in a tank with most other fish. They also wrap their tail around anything and everything. So unprotected pumps and stinging celled creatures are a big no no! They are also NOT a begginner fish. Anyone even considering seahorses needs to do a lot of research before they purchase. There are a few fish that can be kept with seahorses, but it is definately best to keep them in a species only tank. It really really saddens me to see a LFS keeping a seahorse with a tang! Unbelievable!
