Power Outage

Well Ironically, as I was looking up things to buy to survive a potential power outage this coming winter my lights flickered and the power went out. I thought, no big deal it will probably come back on shortly, but I was wrong. It took 11 hrs for them to restore the power. I learned that my tank only loses 4.5 degrees in 11 hrs, which is useful information to have. Everything looks fine and in fact all my zoas look the best they ever have, which makes me wonder whether they prefer temps a little cooler the 80. Anyway my questions to you all is: What are must haves to survive a power outage and what do you personal use? Thanks.

i got a generator.... but others use the battery powered bubbles or the battery back ups for computers, i used an inverter with a boat battery before the generator

In the past, I've used a computer power backup to keep the main pump on. I figured this was more critical than the lights.

It's not in use now because I don't have room inside the stand to store it; not the prettiest thing to keep visible. If you're interested in it, let me know.

keeping flow is most important in a reef tank during a power outage. flow keeps your corals alive and the whole tank oxygenated. keeping temp stable is also important. so you need a generator big enough to keep your flow pumps and heat going. You don't need lights.

I have the battery back-up for my mp40's. It will power 2 of them for 18 hours, anything longer than that will require me to stir the tank with a very large spoon until the power comes back on.

I'm buying a generator before winter.... too many tanks with too much stock now to go without.

You can power a single mp10 for 72 hours or 2 for 36 hours. Considering 1 or 2 hot sticks cost more than the battery back-up it's well worth the investment.

hot sticks? Having lurked on this forum long enough, I know there is a joke coming... I'll wait ;)

In all seriousness though, what are hot sticks?
