preparing tanks for period of neglect

In the next 2 weeks I will be having back surgery (L5-S1 fusion w/plate and screws), I was warned it will be a slow/painful recovery. In preparation I am trying to get the tanks ready for some neglect. I have been cleaning tanks, doing water changes, and trying to automate what I have not already. My family knows how to do the basics like feeding and dosing vit c for me, but not much else. Just looking to hear from others that have been in a similar situation. What did you do to prepare your tanks? What didn't you do that you wish you had? Thanks

Keep your top of reservoir full and have spare sw and rodi handy. Do a larger wc before u go in and just let your tank be. Invest in a auto feeder if that will help u

I've had that exact same surgery in May/2012, and I just did a large water change the night before my surgery, and let it sit untouched for about 3 months. I had enough carbon and phosphate remover in my sump to last me during that time I wasn't able to do wc's. I also have a 13 year old son who helped when I needed it. But as long as you monitor the feedings and feed sparingly, the tank will maintain itself. And actually, we as hobbyist mess with our tanks too much, and I've learned they do much better and flourish when we leave them alone. Good luck with your surgery and get well soon.

I agree with smitty we do mess with our tanks too much, sometime less is more. A big water change should be enough to leave alone for a month.

Thanks for the advice and well wishes. Would you mind if I pm you with a couple of questions I have. Been dying to talk to someone who has been through it.
