random question... Can i have a successful Reef without crabs and snails?

hey guys... i would like to know from some that have tried it.. i got a 5 inch australian tusk and i am wondering if i can keep my fish tank and have a full blown reef in it. considering that i won't have a clean up crew. I can have lots of it in the sump.. but thats it. :)

is anyone out there that has a reef without any crabs or snails?

i am thinking to just add a bunch of sand sifting gobies to help with the detritus build up,., what you guys think?
 
As long as u have bigger crabs/snails with bigger shells they should be fine. They just have to be bigger shells than his mouth
 
For my first tank i kept a wrasse that ate the crabs snail and shrimp and it was fine lunar wrasse would eat any shrimp right away but would only pluck off the snails and crabs that flipped over i think youd be fine with out shrimp but just my opinion
 
Tusk will crush any snail or crab,no matter what size they are. Yes,you can keep a reef without snails or crabs,but you have to very diligent on keeping your parameters in check,especially NO3 and PO4. Also if you have sand bed and it is not deep ,you need to stir it and siphon it on regular bases to get detritus out. i will feed him.. my sand is about 2-3 inches.. i am thinking that maybe starfish? those mess up the sand pretty well no? have one like that and some diamond goby. i am gonna look for a pair.
 
They had one of those tusks in their large reef display tank at Advanced Aquatics. they said he didn't bother anything. I was surprised.
