I recently setup a 40b and I'm looking for live rock for it. I'm looking for light weight, porous rock preferably pukani. Does anyone know of any stores or people that are selling live rock for a decent price in the northwest suburbs?
I know your looking for live rock but I highly recommend dry rock. You'll thank yourself in the long run lol. Dave at ap has awesome rock for cheap. Bottle of mr tims and your done. No pest hitch hikers or apistaia.

I was considering dry rock for the reasons you stated but then I heard you have to cook it or else the dead bacteria on the rock will restart the cycle in your tank, can you shine any light on that?
Put the rock in, dump in dr. Tim, wait 3-5 days until levels are stable and put some live stock in lol. I will deff be dry rock on every future tank. I didn't gave issues using any lr in my tank but why risk it.
+1 to Dry rock. I used about 30 lbs. of dry rock and 10 lbs. of "Reef Savers" man-made life rock to seed the dry stuff with coraline and add a touch of biodiversity. It's been the best start-up for live rock on a new tank I've had so far.
The best LR IMO isn't the cheapest, but the most porous and the shapes you want. I hate seeing tanks that look like rock piled on top of each other and misrepresented as "scaping". The best LFS, then, would have a good selection of pieces that fit your tank's needs. I know Adv Aquatics, Reefwise, and LSA get a good variety of LR, but the prices will vary. IMO, the benefits of LR outweigh the cons of dry.
