Salt from Petsmart.com

I'm not sure what you all pay for salt, but orders over $60 get 15% off and orders over $49 get free shipping. Two buckets of IO 160 gallon for $67 shipped. I thought that was pretty cheap!

That's great but we should be using Reef Crystals, not Instant Ocean for our reefs.

As long as we're maintaining Ca and Alk and Mg levels as they should be, it shouldn't matter what salt. If we need trace elements they can be dosed for a LOT cheaper than buying more expensive salt all the time.

I used Red Sea Coral Pro for my reef, but there are dozens of members who use IO with success in reefs, and such blanket statements aren't helpful nor are they polite. There are a thousand ways to keep a healthy reef.

Couldn't agree more be

agreed, as long as you are stable there are a lot of salts that work. I have an sps heavy tank and i use regular IO.

Randy Holmes on one of the other sites, uses regular IO. He seems to know his reef chemistry. I believe he's written a few books on the matter!

I'd just worry about the shipping. Those things are heavy - and UPS / Fedex in my area demonstrate just how heavy by banging it up before delivery. After 2 failed shipments (yay for box of salt and stryrofoam! oh, and a cracked bucket too!) I'm sticking to buying salt locally.

They had they box of reef crystal at petco on clearance for like $49.
I'm with puffer..RC are good for tank. I tried the bag of tropic Marin and am going back. The ups and downs of alk/ca/mag with other stuff is just a pain to correct.
I'm tempted to try the Red Sea pro..I've made way too many changes to tank lately..I'm letting it settle down for a few months..then I'll try.

I don't know about never have to dose..it's just not as much..at least for me. I know I raved about tropic Marin is the 300 gallon bag specifically because of just sheer water clarity but it seemed to lack. Plus when I tested the batch it was way down on Ca mg and alk. But that's just my relatively noob experience!! :) a friend of mine loved the tropic Marin bio activ but it's really expensive.
