Sand in Frag tank

has anyone put sand (vs egg create) as substrate in frag tank? I am thinking that as frags grow out past their plug they would grow across the sand.

Thoughts?

I tried sand for a while. it was a super duper mess and just ended up going with the egg crate.

I'd not use it. Frag tanks are meant to be shallow with high flow, and sand doesn't fit that scenario very well.

Not to mention it will be a detritus sink, which is disastrous for frag tanks.

I've been tempted, but you'd need cuc that can turn over sand and then they would mess up your layout of frags. You might want to just put empty plugs or tiles around frags so they can grow on that.

I dont have any issues with sand... But I do use flat square plugs vs your other plugs..

For many many years.. Sand has always been used and has done well for me.. I just wouldnt use more that 1 1/2" of sand. I do have a CUC, but who doesnt  Also have a sump with skimmer that helps with any issues down the road

Just do what works for you and what you like.
