Schedule 80 vs 40 loose?

I recently upgraded my tank and purchased schedule 80 bulkheads. When I went to dry fit a schedule 40 pipe there is a lot of play. Has anyone run into this problem? I was under the impression that they were compatible. I'm not sure the glue will fill the gaps. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks for looking

How big is your tank? Most setup only need sch40. You might save a ton of money by returning all sch80.

If the sizing isn't a good match, schedule 80 vs schedule 40 won't matter. I ran into that problem with an adapter at one point that was 1.25" to 1" - just happened to be reversed from what I needed and there was play in the dry fitting in the same fashion. I took the pump and adapter into my local home improvement store and found the one that fit correctly. It would likely serve you well to do the same thing with the bulkhead and find the pipe/adapter size that would work best. Perhaps the bulkhead is rolling in at inch-and-a-quarter and your pipe is one inch, for example.

Provided that you are dealing with the same sized piping, you are quite correct that schedule 80 and schedule 40 are compatable. It just really seems like there's something off in the sizing here.

Sch40 and Sch80 pipe and fittings should have the same OD for the pipe connection (same ID for fittings). The difference is in the wall thickness so in using Sch80 in an application that doesn't require it, you are actually introducing a greater restriction.

Thanks for the replies. When I purchased the tank it came with the schedule 80 bulkheads. 1 1/2" and 1". both fit loose It's 120 gallon btw. I know I don't need sch 80 I'm guessing that the manufacturing of the bulkheads are little off. I agree the od should be the same but they are not. I guess I will just buy new sch 40 bulkheads. Kinda a bummer since there is nowhere real close to buy them. Thanks again for the responses. Hopefully I will be getting some water in this thing soon.
