Stray current - no joke

I had the unfortunate luck of adjusting my heater to adapt to the seasonal change and when I put it back in the sump - the tip broke off a two year old jager heater - I had no clue... a few hours later ALL my SPS's were bone white.. and my LPS and Zoa's were all wincing shut.

After several scratches of the head and repeat test of water parameters I was lost... salinity was sitting a bit high from the water change days ago, but nothing crazy(.30)

36 hours later after researching many possibilities - I found through a nice jolt that I had a large amount of current in my tank - came to find the heater tip broke cleanly off and had been infecting the tank for last day and half...

I doubt any SPS will survive (several colonies 6-8 years old), and about 1/2 the LPS are gone and the softies seem ok, but I thought at the very least I could pass my story along to hopefully avoid others from having the same mistake of mine.

I can't blame Jager- I don't think I roughly handle the heater but it is just glass and if gets dinged just right - obviously it will happen - I had no protector or holder of any kind.

I hope this helps someone avoid similar problems..

Sorry. That's just terrible.

I hope your SPS & LPS can pull through.
I am not sure if I can help anyway... please let me know if I can.

I guess this means a new direction for me - new SPS colonies - luckily I had sold the majority of my large colonies recently - unfortunately the frags i kept behind or toast...

Oh well new beginnings, i'm still just dumbfounded how quickly it damaged random corals.. weird...

live and learn.. my motto has always been 'nothing good ever happens fast in a reef aquarium' and this still holds true..
