Do I need the red filter pad to remove bigger particles or should I remove it and let my fuge take care of the stuff. Isn't the fuge supposed to break down that type of stuff

Get rid of it, it is a nitrate factory. Do you have a skimmer on there? Good flow & a skimmer is all you should need. I'd add lots of rubble & some macro algae to the fuge.

it will only be a nitrate factory if you leave it there indefinitely untouched.....
if you rinse it out regularly it will have the same affect as a sock and help reduce any build up of detritus throughout the sump....

The less stuff breaking down in your tank the better. Don't worry, your fuge isn't going to starve. You'll have plenty of stuff breaking down without purposefully aiding it.

The only thing that sucks is the build up of the detritus at the bottom of my sump. I am not a fan of running a sock since its a pain to change. I have to turn the return pump off to change the sock.. I think it just how I have mine... Every 3 months or so I vacuum the sump. I feel like a vacuum up all my pods from there though.

And yes Deff a nitrate factory..

Your pods will be hanging out in the rock/macro algae in there. I do all my WC from the sump & vac the bottom of detritus at that time. My fuge is a different story...

Like Craig said, not a problem if you're willing to maintain it. No worse than the 1/4" of detritus lining the bottom of my fuge right now. Luckily I have the nutrient export system to deal with it but wouldn't be a bad thing to preemptively remove it from the system.

Yeah I've got a couple different types of macro in there that was just an old picture. No sure if my skimmer is big enough though. It's a super skimmer 65
