How much water should be in the tank/sump.

A box of Marine Pure for the refugium and a Typhoon protein skimmer. That's it.

Just make sure that there is enough water in it for the skimmer. Even if you forget to check on it for a few days you still have enough water in it. When everything is fine tuned, draw a line that way you know you are happy with it.

Thank you I've been getting ready for this start up for a long time I appreciate your help.

Also make sure you leave enough room in case the power goes out and your display tank drains whatever it will into the sump.

I hadn't thought about that. The way my skimmers designed I'm probably going to have to put extensions on the in take & output. Thank you!

Practice safe reefing for your house's sake. Perform power shut off to your sump/tank every week to see if there is any spillage. Place a top over your overflow. Use a water alarm to prevent excessive damage incase of flooding. Other than that everybody had answered the question. Fill water to your skimmer's needs. And leave enough room for when the pump shut off and the water siphon back down to the sump due to gravity without spilling. :)

Easiest way is fill the tank up and let the water overflow into the sump with all equipment turned off. Once the water is a couple inches below the top of the sump then you can stop filling and turn all the equipment on. If the water level in the sump is too low then you'll need to get a bigger sump. If everything is good then you won't ever have to worry about anything overflowing if power goes out. That's the quickest and easiest way imo

Thanks everyone! Now that I've got that settled & made my twenty second trip to the hardware stores I think I'm almost there. I'll start humping the rest of the water up tomorrow morning. I really appreciate everyone but I do have another question. Is the hose connection at the pump normally just a pressure fit? I didn't think I should put a steel hose clamp under water and it is pretty tight.

Thanks again,
Mike

Hi Ryan,
I'll take you up on that offer if you have the time. I need avoid any disasters. Not sure what you mean about a cover on the overflow, I know nothing about water alarms or doing a power shutoff, I also have a UV I'd like to hook up through a Fluval 306 or maybe it would be better to hook it on the return. I had to change my return pump because the Eheim 3400 didn't come close to fitting in the sump. Now I wonder if the new pump will be powerful enough for the way I had it set up or if I should move the sump to the other side for the shorter run. Lots of little things like this have my head spinning. I guess what I'm trying to say is I'm not near as prepared as I though & if I don't get this finished soon the whole happy wife happy life idea is going to jump up and bite me. Any time you're free if you would look at what I have going here and let me know what you would do I would so appreciate it. My wife is just about out of patience I
put everything else on the back burner so I have to get this finished.

Thanks Ryan,
Mike
