My goal was (and still kind of is) was to buy this:
http://www.marcorocks.com/e-marco-40010lbkit.aspx
Take a piece of glass as a flat surface to work on (so you can see the bottom through the glass).
Take the mortar, and spread it really thin and flat in square 'tiles', using edge tools to make the corners flat. Or having a glass square 'mold' to make sure every edge is flat. (So they can go next to eachother).
Take a hammer and bash up my cured liverock into small/tiny rubble. Or just get already cured rubble. Size doesnt matter since its going to be broken up anyway.
Place the rubble tightly packed so that it looks as if its one flat thin rock.
Fill the entire bottom of the tank with these tiles. Making smaller pieces where they need to fit in until the whole bottom looks like one flat piece of rock. Then place regular liverock on top as you normally would. I would call it a 'rock bottom' tank. I think it would look beyond awesome. Take a mj1200 to it every so often to get the detritus out thats inbetween the rubble. SHould be better than sand because you can actually get it out, plus you have the benefits of biological filtration of the liverock. The bottom should be completely flat because I would make it on glass, and look underneath to make sure its completely flat with no pockets. If there are pockets, I would puch them out before the mortar sets. Then just make sure you have a tile mold square to ensure all of them are flat on every side so that can go next to eachother flawlessly. Make larger tiles where you can to have a more seamless look than with many small tiles.
This was my goal with my new tank, but I got sidetracked and am still looking for the time/money to try it. Might try it small scale to see how it works and how easy it would be.
