What is this maroon stuff?

Would you say that this is Red Turf algae on the back of the Cirith snail I just picked up? He was in a small tank with some red mushroom coral that they were selling as well. When I got it home and noticed this, I was hoping that it was some free coral and was going to ask how to move it. If it is turf algae, should I take it it and clean it off?

Can't tell from the dark pic, but it wouldn't hurt to clean him off if it is fuzzy or hairy-like. However, it is likely red coraline which is more probable on a snail. Red coraline is good and adds extra color to your tank :thumb:

Mexican Turbos aren't the best at cleaning it. They tend to just trim the top. I got Chitons that pick the stuff clean down to the rock. Highly effective yet they are pretty slow and pricey but worth it. Reefcleaners is the only place I have seen that carries them. I got four from them about a month ago.

So, the snail made it's way to the top of the tank. Now this stuff that was definitely red before is thinned out and fluorescent orange. It is almost as if the light bleached it.
