What passes for a SW tank.

So doing aquarium servicing I get to see a lot of setups that need work or upgrades. But Wow. Today I seen a 55g with maybe 15lbs of rock. No light, 1 air stone, and 1 HOB filter.

The glass was so covered in algae that I could barley see any of the fish.

Amazes me what some people pass for a SW tank. If ur gonna half *** it or not take care of it. Don't get it.

Am I wrong on this?

I understand where you're coming from...but everyone isn't as experienced as we members are in the hobby, and some people are old school...but it's people like that that'll keep your aquarium service in business. :)

Lol...I'll be the one asking the big question: How long have you been servicing that tank that it looks like that? Haha...I figure if this person has asked you to service the tank, you're there to improve it, right?

I'm sort of with jayjigga here... it sounds like they trying to take care of it if they called you and are willing to spend $ and admit they're not doing it well enough, right? Business opportunity here.

Business opportunity or not, I think his complaint is more about the fact that people are getting into a situation they know nothing about and therefore shouldn't.

I'm sure he's happy about the business, but just like the rest of us when we walk into Petco we still feel bad for the fish, or especially the corals/clams underneath basic fluorescent lighting.

Sure... but at least this person called rather than flushed, or continued to buy fish. So it seems like they're trying, though I also understand that it's tough to see. Like a dog trainer showing up to train a "mean" dog that's been beaten into obedience.

I think the best part is when they get sick of it they put it on craigslist for 1000$ and say complete saltwater set up lol. Tell me u guys havent seen that on craigslist

I wish most LFS's would just drop out of saltwater livestock, and leave it to the marine-specialty LFS. If they did, you wouldn't see so many tanks like this...

Problem is markup on saltwater is nice and high. It needs to be to cover losses, but when big chain stores see big $$ and gullible consumers, they don't care.

I should clarify. I am being asked to move the tanks to another room as the floors are being redone.

I would love to service tanks like this. Let them see what the tank could be, and how it can thrive if taken care of. However this at the moment is strictly to move the tank, let them do the floors, then move them back.

Seeing the condition of the tank. I voluntarily said that while making the move. We will clean the aquarium, change the media and do a good WC for her. And hope that she will allow us to come back for servicing.

But again. It amazes me that some people do this. Regardless of their level in the hobby, $5K mixed reef setup or $30 goldfish tank. If u are going to take the initiative to get the "pets" take care of them or find someone else too. No different then taking care or a dog, cat, bird...
