i keep adding ammonia, about 2ppm, to my tank to cycle it. every day the level goes down to about .5ppm, but there is no sign of nitrite or nitrate. i dont understand what is going on. i could see if the tank had cycled that it would do this but the ammonia level does not go to 0 and there are no nitrates, so i am at a loss. plz help me!!! thanks in advance.

Not sure. You may want to look into using Dr. Tim's One and Only for saltwater. Lots of people use it and love it. Just read the directions and you will have a ridiculously quick cycle.

I know Coral Reef Pet Center in Norridge carries it.

Yeah do 5ppm. At first I thought I stalled the cycle on my biocube 14 because the nitrite would turn the blue drops on the API test instantly to deep purple. No nitrates what so ever. Then one day, boom, nitrites gone and a crap ton of nitrates. One thing I did do was lower my daily dose to 3ppm when my nitrites did not lower for a week. It took almost two weeks for the nitrite eating bacteria to colonize.

i have dr tims on the way i got it off line. had used his ammonia to seed it because i had cycled it once but i was having lighing problems. my mh were making the water get to hot so i switched to leds. but i the mean time i let the tank sit. i was unaware that the bacteria would die with no airation so im having to recycle. i will try raising to 5ppm amonia. thanks

Ammonia is food for bacteria you need to see with a bacteria source, like a handful of sand from an established tank or a piece of live rock.
