When a prize fish becomes hostile to another prized fish

Boarding for Taiwan this morning and hoping my C.Johnsoni is alive when I return

The Candy hog(B.Opercularis) has become hostile to him...and he has been hiding in the rocks...not eating

I used a turkey baster to blow some pellets down in where he's hiding...saw him chop them up quick...he came out for more and instantly the hog chased him back in the hole.

Looks like one of them is going to have to go

Not sure how to pick which $500 fish to sell...guessing which ever I can catch without tearing my aquascape apart!

At this point, I'm just hoping he's alive when I get back next weekend...

That sucks ive noticed with wrasses and i had a ton of expensive ones they dont get along like everyone claims . They do for awhile when they r juvies but soon as one hits maturity it turned into a blood bath at one time i had a labouti ,scotts, lineotous , flame pair , clown fairy all together doing good then the clown fairy killed the labouti that was together for two yrs the flame male killed lineoutous then the scotts , adter that the two killers went after each other long story short i went from a very nice and very expensive collection to nothing. I quit fairys webt to leopards same deal all fine til maturity went from five to one . Maybe its same with all fish being hogs and wrasses look similar maybe one hit puberty good luck man bothr real nice fish

Sorry man, that's gotta be rough having to get rid of a fish because one is too aggressive. Good luck catching one of them! :)

That sucks about your wrasses joe, but until i found this website, i would of thought the same thing. Now if there's ever any wrasse i like, i check out this page first. It looks like a bunch of them that you had, end up becoming very aggressive as adults.

Well, back from Taiwan and my daughter said she did not see the Johnsoni all week :(

Ammonia measured 0 so I figure he's still alive and began a major coral and rock work removal to get to his burrow

He is now in an acclimation box...skinny, dinged fins, and very pale.

Put some mysis in the box and he slowly reacted...took 1 bite and spit half of it out.

Fingers crossed I got to him in time!

I probably would have put the perp in the isolation tank and let the dinged up guy revive by being in natural surrondings. Hoping of course he is under less stress by the perp being in lock up. I was told by a pet shop a long time ago----but this was was for 1.00 fresh water fish...lol

I went back and forth on who to put in the box...

Went with the struggling one, to avoid having to guess when to take everything out of the tank to find a rotting carcass

Not looking good at all.

Day 2 in the acclimation box.

Tried pellets, mysis, & Rod's...didn't take a bite

Watch out for those Candy Hogs. As they get older, then can get very mean. I can't put another fish into my 210 that's smaller than the 4-5" Candy Hog. Including Mandarin, so not even form matters.

Thanks,

I had heard different candy hogs being different levels of aggressive. Supposedly the Bodianus opercularis is one of the less aggressive.

I bought the Bodianus opercularis as a juvi...was only 2"...and I think what happened here was as he matured he found the same shape Johnsoni (male) to be a competitor. So far, he hasn't bothered anything else in the tank (Coral Beauty, Mandarin, starry blenny, yellow assessor, & a clown goby).

Mine was in the tank about 2 years before he started being a real bastard. I got him as basically a toothpick, now he's the biggest Hog I've ever seen. I've had him around 3 years now, he's tortured a 6 line and a Mandarin in a 210 gallon.
