Some people ask y u should support ur local fish stores.

Well cause if u don't, then ur left with this.

Because they are there when I need them in an emergency, and I don't have time to wait for something in the mail. I do like that my LFS is open 7 days, not just 4 days

Because when I feel like spending more than it should cost, I can.

My LFS marks slot for more than it should. I have to go to an RFS (Remote Fish Store) to get decent pricing.

Who in their right mind would pay 30 dollars for a peppermint shrimp or 25 for some chemipure.

The one thing I've bought from them was a fighting conch for 15. Everything else has been from somewhere else.

Sea Escapes? When I first started buying coral I didn't know any better and used to buy coral from them because they were close. I paid $30 for a single stalk of xenia once... However, the last time I was in there I thought their fish prices were fairly competitive.

Back when they first opened shop next to the Omni, I bought a small piece of liverock for $80. Of course, back then it was either them or Splash of Life out at the greenhouse.

Our local fish store is higher price on some fish but there competitive to anyone. There prices are marked to the public that's how they pay for there overhead which is fair since they have what you need when you want it.Like any business you must get to know who makes the decisions there and get to know them and ask for better prices for things that are more than you know they should be and alot of store owners will give you price breaks for regular customers. I could get most of my dry goods from online and save money but i believe in keeping the small businesses alive in our community's and it's always good to support small businesses.

It is good to support small businesses, but I get my dry goods online. Can't see paying sometimes double at a lfs. Livestock I get from a lfs if prices are fair. I am on a budget and need to worry about supporting a family more than a lfs. I think lfs should be a little more fair with their prices.

I support my favorite LFS owners because they are there when I need them. I’m willing to pay more for some items knowing that I have contributed to their bottom line which allows them to stay open to be there when I need them. If a shop gouges me, then I go elsewhere and I have no problem taking my money elsewhere.

My favorite shops give me advice even when I don’t buy something or they make sure to ask enough questions to prevent me from buying something I should not buy for my tank or would be a waste of my money. They also don’t make me feel stupid or like a fool because I don’t know something. I develop relationships with these guys and they know me and my tank…and my puppy who is always at my side when I visit. They all let Daisy run through the store unleashed and play with her. I don’t want to be just another number. I could get better pricing online for livestock, but then after you’ve added the shipping charges, you actually save money at your local LFS.

My favorite shops are as follows:

Aquatica:
The selection is great and Mario remembers me. He makes sure to speak with me at each visit and he’s discounted quite a bit for me. He’s always willing to work out a deal for you. His staff is always friendly and the place is always busy…..it’s like a club.

Gold Aquarium:
Jeff is great with advice and he can talk “shop” for hours with you about your tank. He’s really passionate about the hobby and the owners will cut you a nice deal if you ask. I rarely ever pay sticker price on anything I buy there. Jeff always lets me know when they are placing an order with one of their suppliers and asks if I need anything specifically. He knows I have been after a trio of cardinal fish and he ordered a few and got them in. When I went in to see them and asked him to feed them and they didn’t nibble, he said he would order more and call me when they came in. He never batted an eye and said he would keep trying to get them to eat, and if they did…he would let me know. This has to be one of the best shops I’ve been too and I probably go here more often than any of my other LFSs.

Midwest Coral Farms:
It’s like a candy store!!! Everyone is really helpful and they have the best selection. I do wish the guys would be more proactive about assisting though. I usually end up having to chase one of the boys down, but they really know their stuff there and again…it’s like a candy store. Everything is so shiny!!

LOL..I usually do as well, but when I am at MCF I'm always in a hurry to have someone pull my stuff out of the tanks before someone else wants it too.

You need to learn the hover and stare. Hover over your items and give anyone the stink eye that gets close to you!

I meant this as kinda a joke after I found this Walmart picture.

But I really like all the members support to LFS in the Chicago area. Got a lot of good people here.

I'll be visiting Aquapros, Reef City and Robs Aqutics this weekend. Are there any others near those that I should add to my google map itinerary?
