I really need to test phospates and get them where they need to be. I hate cleaning the glass all the time. Ati nitrate test registering 0 like always. Need to get a better test kit
Once its in the budget i will. Or im just going to start emptying one of my buddies ro storage containers. I may actually start doing that. Time to get me some jugs with lidsOr try using RODI
Probably a little of both. Getting new lighting brackets built. The conduit ones i use now are bending so the middle and back get all of the light. Front not so much. So once the new brackets are built then the 30 gets 4 t5 bulbs added which should help everything out.It looks like some are doing well but you're struggling with color on a few. Is the issue lights, nutrients, etc?
I need to get better test kits to figure out what my nutrient levels are.A lot of them seem darker than they should. For example, the Crazy Bananas should be bright yellow, no? That makes me thing nutrients are too high, not too low? Do you test NO3 and PO4? Could be a light issue, but I'd guess nutrients. Do you have any overly pale acros? I'm guessing your water is too dirty, not too clean.
Am I under the correct impression that you are running these acro dominated tanks on tap water?
How did you compensate?
1) Liberal use of GFO?
2) Willowbrook has excellent water. I suspect that your town has really good water. Have you tested it?
3) Extra large water changes? Your pictures of cheato don't show much of an export capacity.
4) a monster skimmer
I am running a nano without fuge. I am thinking that halimeda (easily pruned) may take away what my test kits don't detect. Cheato in the back chamber seems a little silly to me.
but haven't changed gfo or carbon in a couple months

Everything in this hobby is about stability. Adam at battlecorals used to have phosphates through the roof. Some crazy high number but as long as its stable then over time everything will adjust and grow. This is obviously not what we strive for in this hobby and i definitely dont want anyone following what i do. I just do what i have to for my budget and what the boss allows. I would prefer to have my water at realistic ocean values. I will be moving to rodi by the end of the summer though. I actually already have a 100pgd 5 stage system just needs filters and a few add ons, but thats an upcoming projectCarbon is expended in weeks to days. I would definitely be on top of that even for a half dose. I took GFO offline (2 Tbsp) for a day and the algae on my tank had a bad hair day.
If you ever have the time, please do a TDS reading of Willowbrook water:
1) Chicago water is 150 TDS
2) Bottled Spring water is 50 TDS
3) RODI, when its working is 0 TDS.
I am skeptical that we are working with such a small margin. I speak for regular mixed reefs. No clue about acro, but your setup gives me hope.
A good skimmer has been an essential piece of reefkeeping for public and private aquariums for many decades as other equipment have come and gone. Unfortunately, I can't take that route for a nano. The water parameters are too easily destabilized. I spend too much time fiddling with test kits of questionable accuracy.
Yeah its going to happen. My new light mounts are being worked on now. My old ones are bending and im afraid theyre going to fall so that has to be done first, but next up is the rodi then getting rid of bubble algae. May be time for a tiny rabbit in the 30 to helpSeems like your working with a lot of gallons. You may may want to ask the boss to include a booster pump for maximum efficiency and save water. ! )
Please report for noticable changes from implementing RODI.
Bubble algae is the worst and grows rapidly. Its hard to get rid ofBubble algae. That's rather exotic. You get a lot of imported sealife from the coasts?
Probably part of running a reef for many years. My 3 month old tank is rather sterile with only hair algae to deal with.
