220 Leaked, Fix it or Get A New Tank

My 220 just leak all over the floor, maybe 25g got out. I move all fish into the 75 and thank god I had no corals in there. It took me 20mins to get to the fish out. The tanks bottom seal was bad. My tank is less then a year old, the tank was made in July 2011.

I don't know if I should fix the tank or get a new one. If I get a new tank, i'm thinking about getting a 180aga or a Nano Sea Creations tank(72x30x24)or(72x36x20).

If you have the means, go with a new tank! :) Someone who has done resealing will be a potential buyer for your old one and you could recoup some of your losses.

What's the maker of that tank. If its just a year old it shouldn't leak, they must have done a crappy job sealing it. It's probably cheaper to have someone reseal it for you

The tank was drilled, so no warranty. When I first got it leak and but I fix it, but this is a new leak. Its a perfecto tank, wish I got the all glass. It seems to be a common problem with there larger tanks leaking.

This is why I'm afraid of glass tanks. The odds are small, but it does happen quite a bit (relatively).
If it were me, I would just get a new acrylic tank to the exact dimentions you want. I love rimless glass tanks, but the peace of mind of acrylic is definitely worth it. I switched over to high quality thick acrylic and am probably never going back.

I really like how customizable acrylic tanks are. Plus they weigh very little. Only need my brother and I, and we easily manouvered my tank and stand into my apartment. I had my 110g acrylic built by Brett from zero edge aquariums with 1/2 inch acrylic (its just a standard top-braced acrylic tank, not notorious zero-edge overflowing tank). So much happier with acrylic than with my glass tanks. Zero Edge is located in Carol Stream, IL so you can go see him and talk to him about exactly what you want, then pick it up there for free. Amazing tanks, good prices. Custom builds sumps/stands also, exactly how you want.

Nice tank. My tank weighed 394lbs, it was a pain to move it. So if I get a new tank, it would be most likely be acrylic.

Go acrylic.

Being the tank is only a year old, I would just reseal it. It's not that difficult to do and is inexpensive.

That was his second leak. It sounds like you need to reseal everything. That's a big job and quite frankly I wouldn't sleep well at night worrying about if the tank will leak again. I have an acrylic tank and I do not worry about such things. On the other hand, I have lots of scratches on my tank and I get new ones every day. So pick your poison I guess. If I have to do it all over again, I would probably get a glass tank from a reputable place like Miracles. I would also keep the height of the tank to 20 inches or lower.

If you re-reseal I would suggest that you do everything. A good prep and clean is the best bet! Silicone does not make a water tight seal if new silicone is placed over old that means you can't just do one seam.

Yea it is a BIG job....If you can't repair time to replace. Also I just noticed next tank you get place some high desity foam under it to help with uneven spots. It helps relieve additional stresses to the tank, which cause premature leaks. Sorry buddy!

Hey Isaac, do you have a picture of how to apply high density foam prior to placing the tank? Or is there a you tube video on it? is that something I can buy from home depot or lowes?

Adam, it is probably time for a new tank. If you need some help moving your tank, I can come by and help. I am not all that strong so you will need more help. Lolz.

Thank you Kevin, but I have three brother in laws to help me move it. I did move the tank into the house by my self. Its was a good work out.

Oh it's simple! It kinda looks like the mats they use in the gym floors. I bought mine at HD in a small pack of six. Sometimes it has the interconnecting bits like a puzzle and it is easily cut with a utility knife.
