250g Reef - Build Thread

Just an update on the reef... Not too much has happened since the above post besides the live stock. The flame hawk and lyretail are out and in their place is a one-spot fox face and a very active niger trigger. littler trigger is literally crazy. He darts left, right, up and down all day long. He does get picked on by the flame angel, but i think it's because the trigger doesn't know it's boundaries. Im waiting for him to get a little bigger where this wont happen.

As for the scape, i've redesigned the scape about 5 times since the tank has been running. Im trying to get the right feel for having such a deep tank. I don't want the "wall of rock" look because that doesn't add much depth to the tank. So this time around, I've built up the pile of rocks in a wall shape but it literally sits in the middle of the tank. there is even room on the front of the rock scape as there is the back. This gives the fish the ability to race around and through the rocks like they would on a real reef.

So here it is... the tank with it's new scape...

Update... It's been a long time and an aquascape ago since i've last posted. I've included a video of the tank which shows some growth and additions but what it doesn't show is an update in equipment..

I've updated the sump to a 40G breeder and have managed to use a 10G tank inside of the 40B as my "overflow intake".. This means all of the bubbles and debris that come through the DT overflow, goes into the 10g tank.. Inside of the 10G tank is my skimmer.. The skimmer will skim all of the water in the 10G tank and it disperses it over the side, into the 40B. My return pump sits safely by itself in the 40B.. My next step is to create another section of a 5 or 10G tank as a contained fuge.

Lighting: The light is still the 36-inch T5/LED combo from Prestige LED. However, I've added 4 - 10W RGB LED flood lights to the front of the tank. As little as i thought this would work, it has actually worked really well! They have provided so much more shimmer in the tank and i've noticed the corals in the front opening up more. As of so far, there has been no additional algae growth nor has the corals seemed to have been negatively effected.

As for the video: here it is...

Hi CR - So it's been a while. I've made a few additions since my last update, but not many. I've been in the "waiting game", watching things grow. As we know, in this trade, some livestock grows more abundantly than others. I wish it all grew at the same rate, but that's just not the case. So in the mean time, Here is an updated picture of what is happening in my little reef. .. Enjoy!

Update: Replaced my previous powerhead with one (1) WP60. Flow is ridiculous. It's reaching places the 2 previous power heads were not. I highly recommend those with large tanks to use the WP60 powerhead. At the end of the clip, you can see the water "wave / swell" with the single unit. I am impressed!

Update from tonight's feeding time. I switched foods for a while and I am noticing my reef is getting brighter colors and the fish seem less aggressive. I was feeding pellets before Earl Ray was introduced. Now the entire tank gets a healthy dose of brine shrimp, krill, and some silver sides. Pellets are now just a snack. Anyway, enjoy the update.

Wow, that's a lot of food. Those must be some happy fish! Do you feed this much every day?

For the most part. Based on my skimmer output, the fish and rest of the tank must eat it all up. Also I have to keep in mind that Earl Ray is a scavenger. He constantly eats throughout the day by finding scraps and leftovers.
