...a few months later...

Agreed but MOST of the time when I have an issue I'll Google it and then ask a question on here with the knowledge of what I read and incorporate that into my question.

I agree Frankie, there really isn't a dumb question in this hobby. I said it before and I will say it again, Google didn't exist when I had my first reefs back in the 80's. I relied heavily on books and first hand experience. People sharing their knowledge has led to the advancements in this hobby these last 10-15 years, because without someone saying "this works" people would not try and develop new ideas, out of being afraid of the consequences.

Not everyone is a computer savvy Google geek, who knows how to thin out the BS and get to the meaty threads, where knowledge lies. There are also many people, like myself, who just simply cant get to the BBQ's and meet and greets, but would like to fit in the inner circle that resides here. So I have to agree, I think we all should rethink "noob" questions and maybe try and ignore the fact that the question may have been asked 1,000 times prior. Maybe even do a quick search for the poster and put a link or two to help them and show the community does care, as opposed to writing them off as noobs. I personally haven't seen people being written off, so I may be way out of line here, but hopefully it prevents a loss of a good member!

Well said. I often times just take it for granted that everyone can skim through the garbage on the web.

Can I do what I normally do and throw up funny pictures yet?

I don't want to alter my online persona :spy:

But in all seriousness, I have garnered RIDICULOUS amounts of info from people on here. I have also pissed off and gotten pissed off by people because we're all human.

I think the greater issue is whether or not online forums are actually for you. Cause they are NOT for everyone. If I couldn't take criticism or sarcasm (which is infinitely hard to read, mind you) then I wouldn't have lasted long here either. However, between the chat box (the greatest thing to promote community on this site IMO) and the just vast amount of resources on this site, we don't really need google anyway. We have live "help" with people like Walt, frostjay, I dunno, check the top 10. Experts in all sorts of different topics.

If you're new, we're going to be tough, because we don't want CR to become like other sites. We don't want schillers of Petco flipped fish. Once you're used to CR (which can take some time, cause we're batshit crazy here), you'll figure it out. We take this site personally. Some more so than others.

Not to derail the kitty cat posts!!! And not trying to beat a dead horse here, but one other thing I wanted to mention is, feedback score is located on everyone's profile. If you are going to buy something from someone with a few posts and no + feedback, you are putting yourself at risk. And doing research before buying any specific coral, fish, reef dry goods, etc. will prevent you from being sized up by a scam artist or a BS artist trying to make a buck. If you get to the sellers house and you are not 100% confident in the deal, then simply say thanks, but no thanks and bail. Pretty sure they wont hold you hostage and make you buy it!! I've made 4 or 5 different purchases in the last few months and made sure they were from regulars with positive feedback. I couldn't be happier with the items I received. Ok carry on with the kitty cat posts!

Yogoshio pretty much nailed it. Forums just aren't for me. I thought I sort of explained that. I didn't mean to call it a mile high pile of horse poop or anything. I just gave reasons why it wasn't for me.

Maybe my OP sounded negative or catty, I don't know, but that was not my intent.

It's cool to see all of you support CR and share your perspectives of what it is to you, but it's pretty clear that results, successes and experiences may vary.

Lastly, most of you posting and reading this are not the problem at all, but that said, a few of you already second guessed or tossed the idea around of being more patient with noobs, or at least being more mindful. So that's a win in my book.

Whatever happens once a Reefer always a reefer in my book reguardless of what Forum you post at and be friends with. Good luck and Happy Reefing :)

Jason, I felt I read between the lines of your post and was just trying to persuade you to stick it out and give it another shot. Completely understand if you decide not to. As Frankie said, once a reefer always a reefer, good luck with your tanks and take care man. Although, I hope you change your mind at some point.

Every forum is EXACTLY the same, no matter what the topic is. Coral, stamps, remote controlled airplanes, or reptiles. Every forum is the same. You have regulars, casuals, and lurkers. Your level of participation will determine which one of those categories you land in. In my opinion, forums are a place to tap the knowledge base of experienced people, AFTER a Google and forum archive search. Members are not here to teach you, from the ground up. They're here to guide and hone your skills, as you develop. It's 2013, everyone can Google, and yes, that information should be taken with a grain of salt, just as much as any information you directly receive from someone on this or any other forum. Asking a "basic" question shows that you may not be serious about the hobby, when fundamental information is readily available. Reefkeeping is no simple task.
