I've seen lots of mistakes resulting from messy cabling when I worked in IT so I know what you mean.
 
Holy crap... Was asked to take a skills assesent test hosted by IKM, International Knowledge Measurement. They put on all kinds of assesment tests; coding, sql, networking, etc. Simply BRUTAL! Their adaptive tests turn up the heat the more you get right. Anyone having to go through these has my sympathy. I've got one more to do tomorrow, then a cisco test Thursday. Fun week for a geek :D

Damn sounds like a tough one.. Sounds like they want you to be jack of all trades hah.. What is your position in the company that they want you to take this type of test..
 
I had to do that for 13 years. I was a sysadmin but in reality, along with the network engineer, we had to do it all from desktop support to helpdesk to equipment purchasing to lugging around equipment to various trade shows. I finally got out of the networking side, taught myself how to code and I'm now a senior software engineer after just 3 years. IMO, It's a lot more fun and a lot less stressful. I remember being on call at all times and having to go into the office at 2am because a server crashed and we couldn't remotely log in. How whenever anything would go down like email or the VOIP lines it's like a 911 emergency to get systems back up as quickly as possible. How you were always blamed whenever something wasn't working but when things did work you're never remembered. :(

You hit the nail on the head, a lot of negaties. I'm never planning on being sysadmin, I hate desktop users. Dealing with all the other network problems are enough difficulty for this guy. You're a better person than I am, I can't hack coding. Tired a few times, but end up doing the minimum to get the job running and move on.
 
My work history reads just like Porkchops, but now with more people management and less network engineering. Still have to whip out Cisco skills every now and then though. I do enjoy it though, and the 911 calls don't stress me out much anymore.
