Went into Petco on Clybourn yesterday and noticed they have some decent stuff there for beginners like me. They have about 20 banggai cardinals in different sizes. All looked healthy. They have a frag tank with xenia, zoas, plates, candy canes, etc. I left with a $12.99 frag of half red dragon eye and half green dragon eye zoa. About 15 polyps. Not amazing price since you can get them for $1 per polyp online, but not super expensive like Old Town Aquarium or Living Sea Aquarium. The guy working there sounds like he knows his stuff too. Should I continue to go to Petco to look for deals or am I making a huge mistake?

They also have tanks with dying fish too. But it wouldn't be a Petco without that =P.

I have bought several coral frags from that Petco with no issues. I also buy my salt water from there. With that said, I have yet to buy a fish from them.

Yea, I dont think I will buy a fish, because I dont have a QT set up. The frag is doing good minus an aiptasia that I had to superglue. The guy said he gets new shipment in every week so will visit again this weekend to see if that's true.

i've rescued several clownfish from petco, make nice little pet projects. typically if they dont have ich, their fish are rife with flukes and intestinal parasites.

I am fairly new myself...just purchased a used 20 long setup to use as my quarrantine. Not sure if there is a 'sticky' on the site but there are a number of differing opinions on this subject...

you should quarantine fish for 30 days minimum and corals for an observation period. For actual quarantine tips and treatment i would look at mr. saltwatertanks QT guide. If you are a complete noob he has alot of good advice and treatment options there.

Does anyone know where they source their fish from? Who is supplying them?

I work on Marcey street right by Clybourn and Cortland, I go in on a regular I know the guy his name is Mark. They get there deliveries from Quality Marine and Sustainable Aquatics and get there fish and coral orders on Tuesday and Wednesday. I would definetly QT everythign you get from them especially in there coral Tank as they are laced with Red Flatworms and regular Flatworms. They may have other Parasites and since its a chain store they aren't going to take the time to dip or QT them properly. I mean they have a QT tank but I don't think they care for them enough or have the time.
