Anyone bought coral or fish from Petco??

Went into Petco on Clybourn yesterday and noticed they have some decent stuff there for beginners like me. They have about 20 banggai cardinals in different sizes. All looked healthy. They have a frag tank with xenia, zoas, plates, candy canes, etc. I left with a $12.99 frag of half red dragon eye and half green dragon eye zoa. About 15 polyps. Not amazing price since you can get them for $1 per polyp online, but not super expensive like Old Town Aquarium or Living Sea Aquarium. The guy working there sounds like he knows his stuff too. Should I continue to go to Petco to look for deals or am I making a huge mistake?

They also have tanks with dying fish too. But it wouldn't be a Petco without that =P.

My hubby and I go to this petco to buy our frozen fish food and their tanks almost always have ick. I always want to rescue the poor fish and fix them up in our quarantine tank (haven't done this yet but I always think about it). I haven't ever bought coral there but if I have eyed it a couple times...they have some nice stuff for sure. Personally if it were me I would use a dip on my coral just to be safe before adding it to my tank. I do this with all coral I buy but I would especially recommend it for petco coral. Do you have any Coral RX ?

I have a bottle of Revive coming in. I did not dip the zoa frag I got from them. Should I still dip it when I get the Revive??? I superglued the aipastia on it.

Here's the frag:

Wow, nice pic! It's already in your tank so if there was anything to qt for, it's probably in your tank. I would just watch to make sure they're open; if they are, you're g2g (more or less).

The picture was taken in my tank. They are always open when the light is on. Maybe I lucked out and didn't get any pests from Petco....

I have had problems with them also, but it can happen from anywhere. A lot of people don't quarantine, cannot stress doing it enough.

This is a silly hobby. Do other pets need to be quaranteened? Imagine the outrage at vendors if people had to QT a dog or cat for a month before introducing the pet to the house.

Well when u first get a dog or cat. You should take it to a vet for a check up. I think u can consider that qt in a way.

I have a 50% success rate from petco. I bought two fish from petco on 59 & black road (Shorewood) one was an ocelaris clown and the other was a royal gramma. The clown is about 2.5" and fit, the grammas tale fell off and died.

ARGH. My zoa frag has bryopsis on it. Gonna do a hydrogen peroxide dip on Friday to get rid of it. It's only a few strands but I need to put an end to it before it spreads everywhere. I guess even if I did dip in Revive in the beginning, it wouldn't have gotten rid of this. I also had to glue an aiptasia and I think I am seeing another super tiny one coming up. Lesson learned. Screw Petco. I am considering just throwing this $13 frag away but it seems so inhumane.

um you can get aptasia from anywhere, blaming it on Petco is not the solution, based on your response it seems that regardless of where you got it, it would be their fault. The trust lesson that needs to be learned is to accept that you pick a bad frag by not better inspecting it. there is no excuse for not dipping corals, or inspecting corals before you buy.

i bought a one spot foxface from a petco. i bought it because it arrived at the store the day before and looked healthy. i wanted to "save it" before it got diseased like a lot of their other fish. its doing well. i got it around 5 years ago and he is big, fat and happy :)

Fish from their online store are very healthy, I got two yellow's and one blue tang. I order a purple too but they were not in stock. I call them and said it will shipped once its in stock.

I buy shrip and fish from petco all the time. you just need to know what your doing so you dont buy something with a diesese. QT is a must no matter how good the fish looks. I get those little blue cleaner fish for 9 bucks each, the LFS sells them for 25 a piece. so petco is the place to go if your local petco keeps good live stock and has someone there who knows how to clean the tanks and keep the fish healthy.. no two petcos are the same when it comes to saltwater live stock, so go check out a few locations and see what they have.

IMO, Petco is one of the worse place to buy. First the corals are limited in selection and they only use the worst pc lights available. So they have horrible color. The fish are usually two days from death. But if you QT they may survive, and sometimes the sales are ok.

I go the Petco in norridge across from the HIP Mall. They have some pretty cheap corals at times and you can use coupons they put out in the papers to get them even cheaper! AS always dip them and inspect them before putting them in the DT
