Black Sand

Does anyone have any experience with black sand. I am setting up a 2' X 2' cube and thought it might look neat. I've heard it is magnetic so will this have a effect on invertabrates? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks Marc
 
Black sand looks cool in those AIO tanks (BioCube etc..) since they are all contained and have full matching lids. Not sure if it would look good in a 24" cube thou. Also, I have heard the black sand is like onebazillion times harder to keep clean and look good.
 
I used tahitian moon sand in my betta tanks a few times. You could see everything that landed on it. In a 3 gallon tank, you could vacuum it up pretty quick but I could see that becoming a problem with more than one critter living in there. then again, i use a really fine white sand in my current reef tank and I see a lot on that, too. I also didn't love the texture. It would always stick to the glass when I was cleaning and was very coarse, but I don't know what brand you're planning to use. good luck choosing!
 
i have black sand in my clown tank and have three shimp and soon a fourth never had any issues with the stuff just make sure you wash everything down real good so you wont get white stuff all mixed in oh and everything shows up on black sand lol
 
I have read that black sand will require additional maintenance on your pumps as well. It apparently contains some amount of magnetic particles which is what makes up some of the color. I'll look around and try and find a source to link.

It does look nice though when it is 100% clean.
