I am setting up my 37 Gallon stand, rather, Building it and i would like to remove the black plastic around the bottom. Is it used for structure? How about the Top plastic? Are those glass panels not sanded and potentialy sharp? I would like to remove the top plastic aswell it has 1 cross brace. Can I rebrace it somehow?

I know people put down Pink stuff too before setting the tank, what thickness does one normally put down? tank is 30 X 12.5 X 24

Those plastic braces and rims are there for reason.I would not remove them at all. With tanks with plastic rim you don't need to put anything on the bottom ,just set it directly on top of your stand. You can get rimless tank, that is build so no plastic braces are used at all.It is usually build with thicker glass than regular tanks. If you use rimless tank, you need to put sheet of foam under the tank.

I've seen a 10G tank that had the trim removed. It looks great but I wouldn't try anything bigger.

I tried that with a 10 gallon, it broke trying to take it off. The edges were sharp though. IMO if you want a rimless make one or spend a little more and get a legit one.

Why is the foam necessary? How detrimental would it be if none was used?

You can remove them but you need to then eurobrace the top and it wont have the rimless look.
The foam eases any stress for the glass. sitting on a hard surface, then the weight of the rock, and any imperfection in the surface of the stand can cause the bottom pane to break. the foam creates a soft suface

Wtf...we're bumping a 1.5yr old thread of a guy who's out...Idk if he ever even set up the 37G, lol

But foam can cause extra stress IIRC. I think people recommend leveling a tank with shims rather than foam because it can shift over time.
