Bryman's 90G Reef

Hello all. I've been gone for a while, but no I am not dead ;). I saw Jay yesterday at the reef conference in Schaumburg and didn't recognize him without his ponytail. Pretty cool though that I ran into several people that recognized me. Seems that we still have a community around :)

Anyhow, I've been through my share of ups and down in the hobby, and if you followed my tank build thread on the other big site (formerly), you may be familiar with my tank. Long story short - was pretty successful with SPS, then started to over-think it and play with Alk, used biopellets, and lost everything. I am now going back to my original methods with one change:

- Big refugium chuck full with various macros and critters. It's so packed to the surface so it works as a turf scrubber too.
- Good-sized skimmer - AquaMaxx EcoMaxx EM200 (best I've used)
- Tiny bit of ROX carbon in a bag in sump
- Same ATI bulbs I used to run - 4 Blue+, 1 Aquablue Special, 1 Purple+
- One Change - Calcium reactor instead of Dosers. AquaMaxx Star S2 with AquariumPlants.com electronic solenoid. Running Aragonite and about an inch of Dolomite for extra Mg. I really like stability of my Ca reactor.

I am getting back to my 10G weekly water changes and using the synthetic as close to natural seawater I can find: Crystal Sea Bioassay Laboratory Formula Marinemix. I did re-aquascape a while ago with Tonga branch so I have a lot of filling in to do with SPS. It's not much to look at yet, but you gotta start somewhere.

I recently picked up some SPS from AquaPros (really impressed with his stuff lately) as well as Jason Fox yesterday at the show. I do have some survivors that have some coloring up to do, except my purple Stylo that is more massive than ever and still looking good.

From left to right - ORA Bird of Paradise, JF setosa, awesome Aussie with yellow tips/red polyps from Aquapros, and Frag Farmer Red Robin(JF)

Blue Squamosa that thrived through the bad conditions and doubled in size. He likes it dirty ;)

And here is my non-saltwater pal Frank. I won him yesterday at the conference and got him a little Aqueon 2.5G setup. Thinking of maybe making it a little planted picotope but I have little experience with FW anymore:

Very nice Bryan..Happy to hear you still in the hobby and + fresh water..may be a betta fish or school of glo-fish :)

11-29-14 Update

Well today I decided to get rid of the massive rock structure on the left side to replace it with more branching rock. The purple stylo colony was massive and not in balance with the other frags in the tank, and the sunset monti was taking over the rock and killing of the ponape birdsnest I had in the back. I wanted to get rid of all encrusting, aggressive montis in the tank and I had a frag of the purple stylo and ponape birdsnest, so I took it to Aquapros to trade for some new rock. I'll just grow out another colony of the purple stylo and ponape birdsnest :)

You can't see them, but I got some really nice frags from TD today, including Oregon Tort, Hawkins Echinata, Red Devil Mille, Blue/Red Mille, and BC Fly Me to the Moon Humilis. The Oregon is front and center and I hope to grow a big colony there.

On a sad note, one of my MP40 motors died today so I am gonna have to replace it $$$

Just changed my bulbs today after about 10-11 months. Same as before front to back:
Blue+
Blue+
Aquablue Special
Purple+

So no LEDs for me until at least another 10 months ;)

Hey Bam Bam good to hear from you. I'm trying to grow another pink lemonade colony that's photography-worthy for you. ;)

Hope all is good for you and the fam.

Looking good Bry! Both of our tanks should be growing out together. We'll have a lot to swap in the near future!

12-28-14 Update

I've been filling in the tank with frags here and there. Here's what it looks like now. Sorry for the poor quality of the pics:

After using a few boxes of Crystal Sea Salt, I think I am going to go back to Red Sea Blue Bucket salt. Red Sea leaves a residue over time that Crystal Sea does not, but I think Red Sea has some trace elements that Crystal Sea does not have since it is actually harvested from the Ocean. Plus my tank looked best when I used Red Sea before and I am trying to get back to my old methods :)
