Bryman's 90G Reef

I like what you did with the rock and you're getting some good growth already. looking forward to watching this grow out ;)

Finally got my XF130 to replace my dead MP40w, and I am really impressed. It moves a ton of water but there aren't "hot spots" like I've seen with other pumps and even Vortechs. I think it's the most natural representation of a wave over a reef that I've seen. I still have my working MP40w on the other side, but in the middle of the tank so it doesn't interfere much with the gyre flow. It's on reef crest about 25%, and the XF130 is on 100%. I think 2 XF130s on the advanced controller will be awesome when it comes out. Gyre one way, then the other, would be a perfect setup. I think one xf130 on a 4' tank is not quite enough for a SPS tank so that's why I still am running 1 MP40w. Short vid:

In other news, I found that my refugium is working too well and I was running ULNS and didn't realize it. I've picked up my feeding and Reef Chili about every other day and that has my PO4 about .03 on the Hanna Checker. I had some STN going on before but that's largely stopped now that I dropped my Alk under 8. ULNS + Alk over 8 = bad IME.
madjoe - I cleaned up your Jabowbow pump and it's ready to be returned to you. Thanks again for letting me borrow it buddy!

The tanks looking good! I remember seeing this when you first set it up (I bought your old 29 gallon setup from you years ago). I'm sure you'll have this thing filled to the brim with gorgeous colonies in no time

Im gonna have to keep eye on my reef to down to few fish i noticed less and less urchine food lol i havent tested just go by how tank looks. Usually have high bioload never ran tank with so little fishes to poop on my corals lol

Quick update: Ignored tank for a few months, seriously considered taking it down due to other priorities, but decided to keep it up after hearing about the Mindstream Monitor that will make all our lives easier with realtime Alk / Ca / Mg monitoring. I signed up for the Kickstarter to get one of the first units in December (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/859739753/mindstream-aquarium-monitor/description) After not testing for a long time, I found my Alk was at 2.7 dKH!?!? and my Ca was at 528! So I am not a believer in Ca reactors keeping everything stabilized over time. My tank has always used more Alk than Ca.

Tank looks OK despite the terrible conditions, and I am bringing Alk back up slowly. I also bought a GHL Doser 2 - 4 pump system and set that up last night. I will be dosing as I did originally, but this time with ESV 3 part. I will probably use the 4th pump for Vodka eventually when water chemistry is back in the ballpark. Also, thanks to a great deal on a refurbed Apex from mdefo, I will soon be switching my system over to Apex from my RKEv2. Can't wait for this, so I can monitor from anywhere.

I pulled my Mindstream Monitor pledge when they revealed the first batch won't be capable of Apex integration. I am willing to wait for support in the future but if the hardware isn't upgradable, that's a deal-breaker for me. I'll pick one up when they have the integration.

Not much to look at yet, but it's a start. Really like the precision and controlability of the GHL Doser 2. I can have it dose extremely precisely down to 0.1 ml, which is helpful when dialing things in. My Alk is in the 7's now, hopefully I can keep it there. stuff is recovering mostly except for my red planet that doesn't look so good from an Alk swing a few weeks ago.

Update

I am slowly but surely migrating things over to my Apex from the RKE. I have somewhat of a mixed system now during the migration. However, I get my 2nd xf130 Gyre today and set both up on the Apex. I have each side oscillating with the other, 1 minute on 1 side, then 1 minute on the other. Hopefully this will be OK for the Gyres. At night, I have it turning off one side to have a calmer environment. Here's what the code looks like now:

L_Gyre:
Fallback ON
OSC 000:00/001:00/001:00 Then ON
If FeedA 001 Then OFF

R_Gyre:
Fallback OFF
Set ON
If Outlet L_Gyre = ON Then OFF
If FeedA 001 Then OFF
If Time 22:30 to 11:00 Then OFF

I love the simple but powerful programming logic of the Apex.

Here's a blues only FTS from today after I installed the Gyres on the Apex. Hopefully this Google Drive link works - first time I've tried it this way:

Update

So I finally had the time today to switch the rest of my tank over to the Apex from my RKE v2. Programming was pretty straight forward as I've already programmed Apex before. I had a little trouble with turning outlets off when a power outage is detected. I have one EB8 on surge only and another for more critical items on a surge+battery backup. Basically I was trying to get some of the outlets on the surge+battery backup to turn off if power was lost on the surge-only EB8. I was getting inconsistent results, and then found you can use a 12V 500mA or better AC/DC adapter directly from the Apex to wall for power detection. After I enabled Power Monitoring in the Misc Setup and put in this statement on the outlets I wanted to turn off if power went out, everything works as expected: If Power Apex Off 000 Then OFF

I didn't take a lot of time on cable management, but it turned out OK.

Ha, I think it does have a stainless veneer on front. I do really like it, super accurate and Web enabled. I'm going back to all my old methods and tank is already turning around lately. I gotta stop trying to fix what's not broken.

Yea well that last part about if aint broke dont fix is so true but its the hardest thing to do in this hobby. My tank was running so good i got bored with it . Go figure. Hell even fish dont die well finally had one die lol but i walk into lfs now and they yell like wtf where u been ha. When stuff runs smooth u fill up the tank quick then if your like me u gotta tinker with something just to keep it interesting .and that doesnt always end well as u know. So i have to agree best advise anyone can give in this hobby is if it aint broke dont fix it .
