Can it be done!?

If LFS can have 6 in a small tank.. Why not give it a try.. Just saying
LFS tanks are only temporary holding tanks.

Sounds like you're only giving out the info to make this work. It appears you're just going with what you want to hear anyway. Are you a hobbyist of just someone collecting fish for the "look" of a tank?

no no Im not just giving info to make it work. I have no problem if its not gonna work, if that was the case I wouldn't be ASKING if it would work and for advice, I would just go ahead and do it. Iv been reeefin for 7 years and of those seven years iv only lost 4 fish and two of those were leap-of-fath attempts.

I would say, don't try it. I had to re-home my Purple tang because he was so aggressive to my other tang. They were the only 2 in a 90g, heavily-decorated tank.

Thanks for your advise. Im taking everything into consideration. I think im just going to relax for now.

I remember seeing a tank at Barrier Reef in Chicago on Archer. They had 10-12 tangs in a 125, plus half a dozen large angels. The concept is to have so many, that it causes confusion, and makes it impossible to single another out. Basically always keeping the fish on it's toes, in constant defense mode. He also kept the tank treated with non-chelated copper. IMO that type of setup is selfish, regardless if it can be done.

I think he was being sarcastic, thus the smiley ;)

btw, I have the following tangs in my 180, which is the same length and width as yours just lower.

Dejardini Tang, Orange Shoulder Tang, Chevron Tang, Regal Tang

I'm maxed out on tangs, as they occaissionally swipe at each other but no fighting, adding another tank would likley cause chaos, if any of these 4 didn't take down the new addition, it would certainly throw the tank out of balance and cause "new" fighting, which I've seen by adding new fish, even from other species.

oops, sorry puffer you mean different different Acanthurus (like a powder blue, brown, achilles) or a Zebrasoma (like a purple, yellow or sailfin)?

I still think the territory issue exists, but for some reason I see people getting way with multiple yellow tangs and multiple Blues (Paracanthurus). Although, I think the territorial ones can be iffy, like it's rare to see small schools of achilles, or Powder Browns and Blues, clowns or even worse, Sohals IMO.

There technically are no "territories" in a home aquarium, at least not in any that are commercially available. Some individuals are just more tolerant of each other. I've had a spotted cheek tang kill a larger, and supposedly more aggressive, bariene tang. Aggressive/peaceful is a vague guide at best. As I'm sure most of you have seen contradictory behavior in labeled species. Each fish has it's own personality.

Keeping incompatible fish together is possible, but it's still a loaded gun.

Sounds like your mind is already made up as far as how many tangs you want (give or take 1-2...) and are just looking for confirmation that it can be done so you can do it and sleep easier. Getting the tangs anyway instead of listening to the vast vast majority who tell you it shouldn't be done.
We have just seen it so many times it gets old.
After 99 people say don't do it, a person will find the 1 other person online who claims that it is ok, then go and listen to the 1 other person (because their mind was already made up anyway).

If you look hard enough online you can find tangs in 8g tanks, and even more people who follow that persons lead by assuming they know what they are talking about.

From his last post, i take that he is going to just have what he has right now for awhile. He said he was going to "relax"...

Yah we've all heard that before.
AKA: Im going to say I'm not adding any more tangs online to save face, then do it anyway.

Not saying this is what he is doing...just what a bunch of people already do.

very true on the personalities, it's really hit or miss. I've had fairy wrasses that are labeled "peaceful" by standards on sites like liveaquaria, I had one that could not live with other wrasses and would chase them out of the tank eventually. same for tangs and it's amazing how a fish that seems to be a model citizen can just suddenly "go off" when the wrong fish is introduced.
