Chalice Corals...

Maybe it's because I am from the "Show Me State" and I don't have the experience with these corals. I have yet to even see a large colony in a tank to even determine what the longevity ends up looking like for these corals. The biggest colony I've seen is the one posted in this forum. Even then, Its out of the tank and looks like a brown chunk of plating coral.

Hard for me to know what

is going to look like in my tank because it's such a small piece!

Hmmm isn't that the same case when you buy a frag of some LE collectors piece sps frag less than an inch in size for $300 or so ??

Most of the times you get to see a bigger picture of the mother colony and hope yours would look that insane some day.

Unless someone is trying to make money of the hobby, they won't chop the whole thing up into tiny pieces. Most folks who cut chalices to get something else and want to keep both the pieces would cut only the eyes on the end so you still get to see the main colony.

Just buy from ppl who enjoy it as a hobby than see it as a money making process and you get to enjoy the view of mother colony.

and this is how they grow out ..

they just expand and spread but the colors remain pretty much same

the one on the right is the pink boobs and the one on left is 3G mummy eye

Miami hurricane ..

Grape watermelon

That's just it.. I haven't ever done that. I haven't spent over $60 on a coral so far. Don't get me wrong.. I don't have any designer named corals, nor do I have any "Ultra" corals.. I just house corals that provide a positive representation of a mixed reef.. When I say mixed, I don't even mean SPS to LPS, I mean mixed locations. Pacific, Caribbean, Indo, etc..

So it seems that my perspective of coral collecting is more about the hardyness, size, and requirements than it is about the "ultra".. Now that's not saying if an Ultra piece floats my way at a reasonable price (compared to my pocketbook and not market value) I would pass it up.. Guess i prefer the luxury of keeping it simple and affordable...

But I would still like to see everyone's chalice collection.. How big they are, etc...

names and locations dont sell the coral .. .its color is what determines its name and its price :)

For most, you're absolutely right. For those big ballers that have no end to a bill fold or go broke buying corals, I guess there is a different thought process. I still don't see the point other than saying "look what I have" same thing with shoes.. some people spend $400 on a pair of shoes. Im fine with a pair of $75 sneakers that I can wear everywhere, including stepping in mud.

I like growing frags out rather than buying colonies; I like looking back and seeing the progress. If I spend the money on something it's bc it's something I like. When I do sell frags it's usually bc I need the space and not bc I'm trying to make a profit. (BTW, more than $25 for athletic shoes!?!?! You crazy!!) ;)

Believe it or not, after I fragged all those pieces off my Orange Sherbet, it was only 1/3 smaller! It was growing way too big for my tank. It felt good to offer this rare color to folks all over the country who had been wanting one for years! I've kept in touch with some & have seen their frags grow into beautiful colonies.

LOL - Vic, the last time I spent less than $50 on a pair of shoes, they fell apart in a week.. Then again, they were L.A. Gear. :single_eye:

And who would have thought my 200th post would include LA Gear shoes on fish forum.. HA!

Absolutely Zac and very very carefull what you buy and who you deal with on the forums and CL , sellers who advertise /sell a coral wanting you to believe its something it IS NOT and then say I didn't know that's what I bought it as ...

I'll add some pictures once our chalices get in tomorrow. We may have landed a mummy eye variant that's one of a kind. :)
