DB's 120gal Mixed Reef

Well… I had plans to upgrade the 29g to a 75g – Got one for free from a buddy and had it all set up. Then I got an offer for a nearly free 120g, I obviously couldn’t resist and jumped on it.

It’s a 60x18x26 120 gallon tank w/ 2” plastic center brace. The stand that It came with was more of an entertainment stand, and could only house maybe a 29g sump, so I decided to build my own custom stand.

The stand is 62x22x36 – I designed it so that a 55gal sump would could slide in/out from the side between the stand legs incase the sump ever needed to be removed. Well…after fudging around for several hours I figured out it was impossible to use the 55g as a sump and the new skimmer I picked up due to min/max water level. So I ditched the 55g, and turned my 40B into a sump/fuge. However, It no longer can slide through the side, so I designed the front Panel of the stand to be removable (4 screws) giving me entire access under the stand. The 40B sump/fuge will also allow for a 10gal tank to fit as a Top Off, as well as other equipment.

Tank will be a mixed Reef, focusing on primarily LPS and softies w/ some SPS mixed in.

Tank specs:

Tank: 60x18x26 120 gallon w/ 2” plastic center-brace

Stand: 62x22x36 custom built. Entire front panel is removable to allow full access under the tank.

Lights: Prestige Gamma LED/T5 36” unit
T-5s: Front-to-Back

Unit is programmable and fully customable for Ws, Bs, Cs (red/green), and moonlights for 0%- 99%. LEDs will be controlled by unit for sunrise through sunset. T5s are on 2 switches, which will be on timers or through RKE if I have an open outlet.

Since my tank is 5’ (not standard 4’) I needed to raise the unit higher off the water to get enough spread to the far ends. I will be checking PAR Readings to dial the unit in to the perfect height.

Plumbing/Overflow: Glassholes.com 1500gph overflow kit – 2 1.5” bulkheads in overflow box, 2 3/4” returns w/ locline and flare nozzles at either end of the tank w/ a 1000gph odyssey return pump

Flow: 2 Koralia 1050s, 2 JBJ 1600s on wavemaker duo (opposite ends alternating every 10secs) plus pretty decent flow from returns. Even w/o the ruturns on it’s ton of flow. I may program them to be ‘calmer’ at night via RKE.

LR/LS: roughly 75lbs of live sand from 75gal tank (I will probably add a little more), roughly 90-100lbs of LR in DT – there will also be 10-20lbs in the sump/fuge.

Skimmer: Euro-Reef rs180 rated up to 450gals – realistically, rated 180g lightly stocked, 135gal heavily stocked. I also have a 8” scrubbie which is awesome! I will have it set to turn on 4-6x/day which will clean/squeegee the neck of the collection cup. This will allow for better/more effective skimming, greatly increasing its effectiveness and reducing the frequency of emptying/cleaning the skimmer.

Sump: Pictured below – 40B Tank w/ acrylic baffles. Fuge section is roughly 15x18x12 which is 12-14gals. I have 10lbs of Miracle Mud and cheato. I recently also added 1000pods from reefs2reefs.com (1000pods in DT as well). I will also be hooking up a Two Little Fishes Phosban 150 to run carbon. Maybe tinker w/ an Algae Turf Scrubber.

ATO: Float-values controlled by RKE and timer (backup) with 10gal reservoir. (Still need to set up)

Controller: DA Reef-Keeper Elite w/ 2 PC-4s.

Wild Acro Colony - Started to RTN on a fellow reefer, so it needed to be broken -He didn't have to space/time to do it, I clipped all the based and refragged it into mini-colonies. Hopefully it will start to color up again - It has a white base w/ baby-blue polyps.

Well it was a great weekend for adding to the tank. I picked up the following:

For names, etc - I updated corals/livestock in the first post. On the down side, I think Im eating frozen dinners and Ramen for the next month because I wont beable to afford any other food...

Picked up some more goodies this weekend...

2 heads of what is now being called "RW Pink Raptors" -Came from a Collector in FL, Brian/Mike have spent several days searching online to ID it with no luck - Ill try to get a picture up.
Also did some trading w/ a reefer so I picked up another 8-10 new Z/Ps and a few SPS. Dont have names for really any of them, so I need to do some ID Searching/toss it up on here.

Haven't posted a picture of my 40B sump because it doesn't have the Euro-Reef RS-180 in it... having problems with the pump firing so it being sent back to see if they can fix the issue.

Finished the front panel of my custom stand (still need to decide what I want to do with the side panel/doors). Doors 1 & 3 are hinged, middle door is removable/on magnets. The entire front paneling is removeable to gain full access under the tank/sump.

that stand is amazing. i hope mine comes out that nice. awesome write up too. one day we may have to have a frag party and swap a few between ourselves. lol and i will be sure to bring a couple giant rawhide bones to get on the dogs good side. lol

I've only had it for 2 weeks and it probably has close to double the number of bulbs/polyps as when I got it - That's all I can say as for experience lol - Thought id give it a shot. I've also moved it up higher (from the sandbed) to get more flow and more light (even though people state its 'non-photosynthetic') it appears happy.

Switched out my Odyssey pump for a Eheim 1262 ... holy cow! I had to make sure it was plugged in, it runs completely silent!

Figured out why the skimmer pump wasn't firing...New impeller is on its way...

As I mentioned before, the entire front panel of the stand is removable for easy[er] access to the sump. Skimmer is currently not in the sump. I still need to at the 10gal Top-off tank, and clean up all the wires/program the RKE.

Thanks to Will and his magical silicon type i was able to patch the last pin-hole leaks in my plumbing. Phil brought over the new impeller for the skimmer pump and the system is running great now! Even with the skimmer, return pump, and 4 powerheads, all you hear is the faint flow of water going into the overflow box - I love it!

Here is the completed sump:

This skimmer is a beast, specially with the swabbie on it - Had to cut out part of a 2x4 and still only have 1/4" clearance but fits like a glove.

Only thing left to do is add another tank in the stand for Top Off and hook up the ATO and RKE

Oh, and my mini-colony of Utter Choas is growing up nicely, Cant wait for these puppies to get full-size
