In that case go buy a 5lb bag of fresh dry sand or go purchase one piece of dry rock and see if you get any diatoms forming on it. My bet is you do.

Diatoms aren't caused by nitrates or any portion of the nitrogen cycle, they are caused by silcates in the sand.

Excellent catch, it is true that diatom algae consumes silicates first, but they also take up other nutrients present in the water column.

In any case, the cycle that you will get when adding new media to your aquarium will be so small that conventional testing equipment will not pick up the spike in nutrients. My comment was more geared toward PufferPunk's question about media lacking a bacterial coating would cause a cycle.

Toss the SPS skeletons in your refugium. They make excellent frag plugs.
