El Dude's 150g build

You could always do a hypo treatment instead of copper.

Now this is my personal opinion, and I know others who feel the same way, but all this talk about copper permanently ruining equipment doesn't hold true for me. I believe there is a period after copper use that it is not safe to add inverts but running carbon will absorb the leaching copper until such time that it is sufficiently gone. We're not talking about a radioactive isotope here that will last for hundreds of years. Keeping in mind that there are trace amounts of copper in nsw, I have dosed copper and then ran carbon until the copper no longer tests positive and it has worked for me with no ill effects.
My 90 reef used to be a FOWLR that I ran a lot of copper in. I ran a big bag of carbon for a couple months before adding my first coral. Same, tank, rock, sand, sump, etc. Take a look at my 90G thread, if this is considered unhealthy then I don't know what healthy is :) Also, my QT/Frag tank might have a fish swimming around in copper one month and the next it might have a couple dozen corals in it. Before adding inverts, I'll drain the tank and run carbon for several weeks until the copper tests negative again. I ran copper in my 75G FOWLR and took out the snails. Once the treatment was over I ran carbon and put the snails back in. I've done this twice and all my coraline bounced back and the snails, which are one of the first to die if Cu is too high, are all doing well.

Disclaimer...What works for me may not work for you. Also, I have not tried this with a tank/equipement that always ran Cu for long periods. In a case like this, it may leach high levels of Cu for a very long time and your stuff may be permanently ruined or may take very long fallow periods while running carbon to get back to normal. In all of my experiences with Cu I always ran carbon after the treatment and never had a tank that perpetually ran Cu. Lastly, I have talked to several people who have had the same experiences as I have so I know my experiences are not isolated.

Hopefully your new Sailfin, nice fish by the way, doesn't have crypt. And if it does, you could do a hypo treatment instead of Cu :)

Chelated copper is intentionally attached to a large molecule, that makes it much less likely to bind on anything else. This makes it easier to dose and easier to remove from the tank once finished. If anyone remembers seacure copper, it was not chelated. It would take a week of dosing before you could get a reading. It would bind to everything it touched.

IMO hyposalinity should only be attempted by someone with a lot of experience, the right equipment and time on their hands. The lack of a biofilter and ph swings will do much more damage than a theraputic dose of copper.

^^^^Wow thanks for the input guys. I appreciate it! I'm doing a second round of meds as soon as I get out of work tonight. I'm going to let it sit for 48hrs and follow it with a healthy w/c. The sailfin is still doing great BTW...ammonia, nitrite and nitrate all test zero so the little bit of liverock is working for now. Its not a permanent fix, just there for the interim while I get this guy cleaned up.

So I finished the antibiotic/anthelmintic treatment on Wednesday and decided to let the surgeon rest for a few days. Today I noticed a white spot on its dorsum so BOOM! Copper Power it is...the manufacturer recommends a really high dosage 1 ounce/20 gallons or 2.5 ppm. Well I removed the live rock and I'm going to dry them out for a few months then bleach them to cleanse them of any cysts. I put in some lengths of 1.5" PVC and adjusted the level to just about 2.5 ppm per my API test kit. Now I'll let the treatment go 14 days and reassess...sigh...

Been a while since I updated this thread.

I picked up a pair of ReefBreeder Photon 24's. I have a bad cyanobacteria problem I'm fighting right now so ignore that. Here are some numbers:

Values are taken dead center under Photon24's.
Salinity 35ppt
6" AWL

Blue-100% White-100%
Surface-1300
12"-650
24"-325

Blue-50% White-50%
Surface-760
12"-345
24"-180

Now because I know reefers are visual creatures here are some shots of values over my 150g.

Blue-100% White-100%

Please note the bottom right value was accidentally taken in the shadow of the rockscape. Also I did these numbers with my phone and it took a long time so I don't feel like doing the numbers all over again...and that's why the numbers are all wavy! Lol

Blue-100% White-50%
This gives a 18k look its almost 20k but the red LEDs add a lot of color.
