Eric's Reef

hey sorry man, that's a shame, I recently had a similar situation with my tank and have lost nearly all of my SPS over the last few months, partially because I never could get my Ca Reactor dialed in and even when I did, something would go wrong and make things worse, it's been an extremely frustrating experience, as well as losing the male flame wrasse (from a pair I've had for a year) for no reason. I'm not throwing in the towel and have thought about starting new, but I have alot of fish and had ideas of just scaling back to ONE tang and a bunch of fairy wrasses and /or anthias, but with work and family, I'm just too busy right now to even contemplate it. SO for now I'll keep it going, taking the reactor off line and regular WC's.

Eric, it hurts to lose all the SPS / live stock in general. Let me know when your system is stable again & I'll get you frags.
Also, IMO, your phosphates are way too high. If you are redoing then I suggest you to dip your rocks in Lanthanum Chloride with a power head to remove all the leaching phosphates. Most likely reason I see in your case could be due to the phosphates adhering to the SPS base & irritating it. Very possible if you used any phosphate control liquids.

really sorry to hear this Eric ..

Glad you are starting again and our experiences teach us the best so your new build is going to be much better :)

Good luck .

Thanks, Shaun. I managed to get that loripes you gave me out and into another reefer's tank, but then his tank leaked and he lost most of his sps when they had to be moved to a temporary holding tank. So not sure if it survived yet, sadly the shortcake didn't make it. As far as the phosphates go, I mentioned about a month ago that they were at 0.08. That was only for a short time period. They were much lower leading up to and during the crash. (0.03 to 0.05 was pretty much the norm. I've decided to burn off the outer layer of rock using muriatic acid and that's suppose to remove any phosphates from the rocks. I never used any phosphate control liquids and now I know not to try them, thanks!

Sorry I apologize for misreading. I thought your phosphates were 0.8. 0.08 is Low & actually the ideal level for corals. So Phosphates are eliminated from causing an issue.
Another tip I learnt was "Super Glue" :) I have a couple of colonies STN from base (Of course reasons are plenty), basically I pulled out the colony & covered the STN'd area with super glue to restrict the spread of tissue necrosis. You'd be surprised it works like a charm.
I don't frequent the forum a whole lot, had I known you were having the issues any earlier I would have certainly passed on this suggestion to save some of your corals.

Regarding the Shortcake / Loripes or any other, no sweat...I got you covered. Let me know whenever you are ready for SPS & I'll replace yours.

Fresh start... Sometimes you need it.. Hopefully you have a new line of credit for coral purchases... Lol

Nope, you read correctly, it was 0.8. I just went back and fixed the typo :) I knew about the superglue and actually used it to save my TDF earlier on. I have ultimately landed on the cause being the repeated disruption of an old sandbed by a diamond goby and dwarf golden moray that were introduced late last year. I had a "rock wall" against the back glass and I took ALL of the rock out last night and it is soaking in bleach. The amount of detritus behind the rock wall was astoundingly disgusting. I'd be surprised if i use half the rock after its cooked. No more rock-walls for this guy. Thanks for the offer, I'll certainly be paying a visit when the time comes ;)

Hehe...I have a special savings account where I route money each month to cover our property taxes. I launder extra cash there each month to cover the hobby expenses!! The war chest is ready to go as soon as my tank is :)

I might have to use that trick!

It actually happened by mistake. I elected to have a certain amount deducted from each paycheck to go into the savings account for taxes. What I didn't know at the time was that they were deducting from my 2 monthly salary checks plus my commission check each month. When I set it up, I was thinking. "I get paid twice a month", which is true, but I get 3 paychecks. Needless to say, I've let this go on for almost 5 years and I have quite the secret nest-egg built up ;) Someday I plan to surprise the wife with a few weeks in Paris.
