Fluval Edge convert

Hey guys,
This is my very first post in here! I just got started with a Fluval edge convert and it's been up and running for about 2 months now. I have had a lot of help from rattyE36 and JVC as well as the guys at Midwest Coral Farms. Now it's time to start learning on my own!

I just started slowly adding coral and only a few other creatures in addition to a cleaning crew. The biggest issue I am having is my lighting. I have converted the regular white bulbs to stronger ones with the proper shield for salt protection (M11 maybe?) and I have 2 strips of blue LEDs but my color is still REALLY washed out. Any recommendations on blue LED's?

Not to put you down, but good luck. The only way to successfully have a reef tank with a Fluval Edge is to DIY a 3w LED fixture or retrofit a couple of 50/50 PC bulbs into the hood. Been there and done that with the MR11 LEDs and blue LED strips and all sorts of other gimmicks. In the end the way the hood/opening is designed limits light spread and intensity everywhere but the center of the tank. The only way to get usable light to the outsides of the tank that I have found was to use 3w LEDs with a 60* optic on them. Almost did it again but went with an Ecoxotic EcoPico!

There is nothing you can do with the stock light arm that is going to allow for anything but polyps and mushrooms. Even with those color will be iffy. There was a guy selling a very nice fluval edge heatsink here in the classifieds that would make for the heart of a great fluval edge lighting system.

Doing proper LED's would solve a lot of your problems but it won't be cheap. The fixture that guy is selling on here would be perfect if gotten for the right price.

I would get the heat sink from the classifieds and a 6-9 LED Kit for the tank. It MUST BE DIMMABLE though in order to provide the coverage you need without destroying the corals in the middle of the tank.

Good luck!

This......

The thing the guy is selling is simply the heat sink which is what you mount the actual LED's to. The reason his is desirable is because it is made to fit the fluval. He did mention something about including lights with it in which case you would be set provided that they are dimmable otherwise you would still have to buy the actual LED's and mount them to his heat sink.

Even if they are not dimmable you could just swap the driver out.

Agreed...I PM'd him on behalf of my sister and am trying to see what he would want for the whole deal all said and done. In his ad he is asking for a return pump as partial trade which I just so happen to have so we'll see I guess.....

Good deal. The edge is a great looking tank. It was just never meant to be used as a reef or saltwater tank. They are always sweet when done right though!

I'm willing to work on it and make it right because they have the potential to be really really cool...hopefully everything comes together! The biology of the tank is great and it's stocked appropriately for its size...I just want the corals to thrive more and the tank to be less....brown.

Thanks for the tip! rattyE36 worked out a pretty sweet trade + money arrangement with the guy and the trade will take place after the new year!

Thanks again!
