For those who are familiar with K1 media...

Thanks everyone for all of your ideas. I'm just a bit confused with what direction to go at this point. All of you have excellent points.

I think my approach at this point will be to slowly take out LR from the sump little by little over the next couple of months and see how the tank responds. Maybe I'll get lucky and the tank could do fine with the 75 lbs that is in the display alone. It's Marco rock, so a lot more porous then some other kinds. If not, maybe I'll be satisfied if I can just reduce the amount of LR in the sump by half. At this point, though, I think I would benefit from learning more about the K1 media, especially regarding how to run it. I'm not sure it is the best option for me, so I will continue my research on it as well as looking into the Siporax that Mark mentioned.

No, this is the same concept, just slightly different application. Googly K1 reactors. There are some pretty simple DIY concepts out there. Some using something as simple as a tupperware container and a tom's aqualifter.

K1 tends to float, so you need to have enough controllable flow to where it's able to be pushed around by water. Below in my video you can see the pump on the left pushing water up and the drain tubing from my DT is on the right pushing it down. I think one of those biochurns could work with K1 if there was enough K1 in there pushing water around, forcing the K1 to go with the flow. PM Josh (jrpark22000) or look in his thread to see how his K1 reactor is setup. I'm almost sure that it's similar....and it's a serious piece of equipment. It's beautiful.

Thanks for the video, Walt. After yours, I watched a few of the other video clips that demonstrate how to build one. These really gave me a great understanding on how this type of filter needs to work, and it actually looks very simple to make. It would only cost the price of the media since I have everything else. I'm thinking why not give it a try?

lol, Only reason I'm going this big is my tank will be huge with minimal rock, so I'll need as much sump help as possible, lol.
