for those who have Ca Reactors

I'm thinking about taking the plunge, but it's a costly endeavor. So I have 180 (approx 240G total) dominant SPS tank and the Kalk isn't keeping up and I'm getting ph and alk swings if I dont keep and eye on things. So I'm looking at the GEO 618, which runs a bit over $400, of course you them have to spend a couple hundred more on the regulator and tank. so lets say $600+ for brand new. I think these support up to 400G, so I think the size is good.

Any thoughts?

Love the GEO 618 I have had one running since mid November 2012, every once in a while I have had to adjust the input water and dial in the co2 but its pretty set and forget. To save money I just bought a used reactor cleaned it up and replaced some of the fittings and old connection. Where you want to spend some money is the regulator and check valve. Check Aqua cave they have great package deals that include bottles.

thanks Isaac, anyone have a Precision Marine CR622? it's rated up to 500G and I found a good deal on one online, but it also seems like it's discontinued, but some people still carry them. Not sure I should buy a discontinued model, but then again, these things are built well.

I'm still trying to figure out why Isaac has one on a nano :confused:

I will be in the market for one down the road.. But I always like to read up on them

Hey Chris was taking a look at that reactor and it looks good. I like the jenco fittings already installed. Those type of fittings are much more reliable. Lid looks like a snug fit too

How are you planning to supply water?

Hey Issac, you mean the PM or the GEO? I assume that you feed it via a maxijet, which is what the instructions say. It's interesting, on the BRS site, it rates the 618 at 400G, but then notes that for a SPS tank it's rated for 175G...ugh So I assume the PM 622 which is rated anywhere from 500-700G, would be on for a 180G SPS tank.

Pringles - so what did you like about the PM? or dislike copared to the GEO? what size and type of tank do you have the 618 on?

Thanks Matt, so that eliminates the CR622 (not sure about the GEO), I'd like to get one of the one from AE, but it's a bit steep, trying to stay around the $400 range for the unit itself.

what about the CoralVue CR140D or even the SRO CR5000?

They both almost look identical & almost the same set up, but for the GEO is kind of set it up & forget it . One a year I refill co2 & change the media , I using this reactor on my220 gallon sps.

thanks Vinnie, so what effect did adding the reactor have on your tank? so the 618 was enough for a 220G SPS tank?

No I actually Tee'd of from my main circ pump put a quality needle valve in to control the water going to the reactor. This method eliminates the pressure build up in the reactor and means that I have zero leaks. The maxi jet while a easy way to feed the reactor has maintenance issues, ie allowing detrius in your reactor or the prefilter on the pump will become dirty over time and slow water going thru your reactor which could cause swings in Cal and Alk.

so what if I am using a maxijet from my sump (which has clean water, as the refugium is first, then flows to filterbags in the sump), which is were my main pump (dart) draws it back into the tank.

I'd go geo. Had one and was great. Downgraded to an old style knop c which rocks. Only supplying a 75 although. You will be very happy. Just nice to only add a little if anything

you should just get a doser. Calcium reactors are a pain. i had one and i went to saturated kalk with vinegar. have you tried vinegar? you can dose 3 tsp per gallon with 15ml of vinegar per tsp. so 225ml of vinegar, 15tsp of kalk, with 5g of ro.
