Use a pair of side cutters and break them lower in the branches. Done it a few times on my colony

Really I always thought that you needed a band saw for a clean cut or it could kill them , maybe I was feed some bad info

I cut them as far away from the head as possible at the base of the Y and never lost a head. Maybe I'm lucky, dunno.
